1980s Peavey Foundation appreciation thread

A not-so-great pic of me rockin' my '86 Foundation live some time back. Some basses have come and gone, but this one's stayed in the stable. Great basses all around.

I am PSYCHED to finally own and play a Foundation. The bada$$ is a neat touch. My first RIC had a bada$$ way back in '83, a'la Geddy. I always loved that bridge.

I'm hopefully going to be gigging this baby at my 40th birthday bash next month. I can't wait to get her!!!

This is my first Foundation. I've owned a T-20, T-40, T-45, Dyna, and Patriot.....I'm looking forward to the J-style neck!!! These old Peaveys are the diamonds-in-the-rough of basses.

The Badass is an add-on. But the Foundation bridge is pretty nice.

Quick question: I talked to the former owner of my Foundation and told him this was the best bass I ever owned. He was happy to know it (after all he gigged this bass all over the place, including at the Whisky A Gogo -yup he could prove it) and he told me he had it customized with a P style neck instead of the original J style neck.

Is this at all possible?

I believe that a Patriot neck (1 3/4 inch nut) would be a direct swap for the original neck on a Foundation.

I will measure.

What is the nut size on a Foundation?

I keep reading here how the Foundation has a Jazz neck, and I disagree as far as mine.

I actually hate the Jazz neck (started on a Korean P clone) and if I were to buy a Jazz it would obviously be a Geddy Lee.

Hey, cool to see the appreciation for old Peaveys. My first bass was a Peavey Fury and I've had a few other Peaveys over the years. My latest find is a '85 black/rosewood Foundation I bought off craigslist for $150.

Does anybody know the original retail price for the Foundation? Was it marketed as a beginner's instrument or toward more advanced players?

For those of you who also own vintage Fenders, which holds up better over time, the Peavey or the Fender?

I paid $225 total for my custom order foundation in 1998

They were marketed as gigging gear - not compared to fenders .. stores for some reasons sold them as quality entry USA level stuff.

My peaveys all last better over time than my fenders.

Peavey back in the day would do just about any custom order at a gigging guy's budget.

Some patriots have a Pbass profile... they could have swapped head stock details and serial numbers.

They were finicky aobut requesting serial numbers.

Well, I measured the nut and it is 1 1/2", which is conform to the specs.

But it is not a Jazz neck. To me, the Jazz neck feels like an oar. I absolutely cannot play on a Jazz, or much slower and tire easily. I was built for double bassists which a big strong left hand.

Well, I have to tell you....I've been using my new Foundation for the last few band practices and have been blown away by the tone I can get. It is VERY Rickenbacker-like. I couldn't be happier. Those super-ferrite pickups are the secret of the bass industry. Wow. We play Green Day, Foo Fighters, Rush, Beatles, SRV, etc... and it worked for everything, best $225 ever spent.
