There are a huge range of basses that would be comparable at $1,300. It just depends on what your son is comfortable with. I'd do more research and really check out your options if you're willing to pay that kind of money.

And, by the way, you're a really cool dad for supporting your son's music...

Once you play an Alembic,you wont be interested on other basses.
I owned 3 Persuaders and 1 Series 2

While it is certainly true that there are quite a few makes & models that offer substantial, professional-level quality for used instruments in the $1,300 price range - including the Lakland, Peavey, Roscoe and MTD models that Malthumb mentioned - Alembic is a boutique make that is in an elite class with very few others (i.e. Fodera).

While the Persuader may be one of Alembic's entry-level instruments, there's nothing remotely amateur about it. Every Alembic bass guitar is outstanding, and it's likely that this is the best instrument you could possibly get for your son, given your budget. You can't go wrong with it, that much is for sure!
