1987 Musicman Sabre sound quality issues

I bought a used 1987 Sabre from Guitar center online (I know) and the looks, the feel and size are great. I only have two days left to return it if I don't like it. I have two stingray basses 1979 and 1982 and the sound is great. With the Sabre bass unplugged and I pluck the D or the G string, it has a rattle buzz sound. The neck is straight and doesn't appear to be hitting any frets ? It has a string hold down tab for the D and G on the neck and I loosened it to see if it was affecting it and it's not. Any input of other things to check ? I like this bass and would like to keep it.

Bridge / nut?

The battery cover is tight.
The nut slot looks good and the right size.
The bridge seems ok. It's a vibration off something ?
Could old strings cause it ?

Depends on which part of the tuner is rattling. The clover is a press fit onto the slot on the shaft. if that loosened, you can try squeezing it back tight in a vice, but you'll put dents in the tuner shaft doing that (unlless you can be very careful using wood covering the teeth of the vice.

if the gear is rattling, take the gear off and see if there is a plastic gasket under it. I know older ones didn't have one, and at some point they put one in.

if not, Musicman still sells a replacement tuner.

It is a noisy tuner key. Any fix for that ? The screw is tight but the key vibrates.
Just have to find a replacement tuner or set ? Any suggestions ?
lol I’m so stupid but lots of my friends already knew that.

I have that on mine and spaced it. Sorry. where I’m pointing with my pinky finger. The “leaf” is loosened in the post.
Don’t try to squeeze it tight with pliers because the shaft can crack. I put a single drop of super glue in the gap at the bottom of the clover, there’s space in the slot. I think mine came loose when I knocked it once. It drove me crazy. Good luck.
Cool Sabre. You still have the mute pads. Me too.
