My old Peavey Forum AX has the same layout and can get in Smith territory too.
I think the Cirrus does a pretty good Ken Smith-ish tone. The Forum is in the neighborhood for sure.
I think the sound of the original Cirrus basses is a Smith clone. My Forum is close, but not as exact a copy.
Is because of the pickup placement and pickup distance to each other. My modern Sadowsky sounds very close also! But a smith is a smith! Nothing will sound like it unless is a smith

To my ears, the VFL Cirrus sounds like a Smith. My Forum and Modern sound close.
This is the rest of that demo. Yes, it is distinct from a Cirrus, but they definitely in the same family.

Certainly the pickup placement is part of the equation but it’s also those VFL’s in the Cirrus that bring it to cross into Smith territory. The Forum and Sadowsky Modern (as well as the Tobias Killer B) sound similar but the Cirrus really gets into the territory.
I’ve had 3 cirrus in the last 20 years and there were all great basses but could never get used to the string spacing and 35” scale
Plenty of Gospel players have used the Cirrus. The Forum AX, like mine is a super rare model. It is also much heavier. Mine is 11lbs 7oz.
Late 90’s - early 2000’s, Urban Modern Gospel players either had a Smith or a Cirrus.
The Ken Smith/Cirrus moment seems to be over in Gospel. I see more younger players with active Jazzes than anything else.
Sharay Reed came on the scene and that was that.
I’ve seen video of a young Sharay Reed in a Ken Smith . It was good but it wasn’t the greatness that came to be.
