at alocal shop near me they have a new eden 550 for 930....pretty ncie price...if you can find one of them in that range go for it, or get a used one for 7-8hundred.

I agree. I run a Peavey T-Max head (500 watts into 2 ohms) currently. A Peavey Firebass head will put out 700 watts into 2 ohms. You can find them used really cheap.
I have the T-Max too. Hi-Fi it ain't, but it sounds good, has plenty of oomph, and is reliable as get out.

I've been using a Nemesis NA650 since last July (bought it from ThePerfectBass) and I've been totally satisfied so far. Seriously warm solid state, can dial in some grit if you want, semi para eq, plenty of power for all but stadium gigs and well, it's blue - obnoxiously blue. I just love it.
