Double Bass 2 PeeDub Buddies...

eatcher turkey. Nice.

DURRL, doncha breathe a word. I'm goin' to a big dinner with my lady friend, who's a fine violinst BTW, who does some teaching at a Bluegrass center. She's a fine jazz player, but we gonna play with them. No, yer eyes are OK....I said play with them, them Bluegrassers. ME playing with THEM.
DURRL you gots to give me some advice....how do I do this?? What? 3 changes per tune? Keys?...E, B, G and D....right? Can I play a passing tone er two? b5's? Will they hurt me? Will they call my scroll a headstock? Will they call my fingerboard a fret board??????
Can I say Scotty, Red, Ray, DIZ and Miles?

Maybe I'll just make a scene............

I'm skeerd........:crying:

Oh, I'm sure you'll make a scene! :D

If you were sitting in with our band you'd play in C, D, Eb, E, F, G, A, Bb, & B, not to mention Am, Bm, Dm, Em, F#m & Gm

Passing notes yes, leading notes yes, flat 3 & 7 yes, flat 5 not so much... Walking can be good on the right song - you'll know it when you hear it.

I'm sure you'll have a great time Paul.

Just follow the singer :)

Our Donosaurus (Don Higdon) and Lou Pappas with two of my most favorite basses on the planet. Arnold Schnitzer's Walnut (Dono on the left) and Lou with the quilted big leaf maple.
Read all about them here......

http://www.aesbass.com/handmadebasses.htm

Small world....Dono is a great friend I met here at TBDB. Lou is an old friend who took a lesson from me or two in about 1976 in Denver. They both end up in the same Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra in the bass section playing my favorite luthier's basses.
I hear the conductor is just amazing.
http://www.ridgewoodsymphony.org/

In the end, all things considered, I really like TB.

EDIT: I almost got in Dono's face about not having a bib on the walnut, but it is there hangin' down on the front.. ;) The bib!!!, the bib!!!!!! :hyper:

Wow, two of my all-time favourite basses are IN THE SAME SECTION!! **** - I'm going back to bed.

You're gonna get yer butt kicked. :D On the bright side, you'll develop a brand new appreciation for bluegrass and the musicians who play it. :)

Oh I would love to be a fly on the wall for this jam. :hyper: This maybe the ONE and only time in my life that I could give Paul advice on a tune. I hope they rip in to Foggy Mountain Breakdown (G-Em-D) or Dear old Dixie…maybe Rocky Top, Angeline the Baker, Sally Good ‘in (two chord song in A).

My dollar is on Paul to hold his own and have a new appreciation for “the simple” music. His bass will wonder what the hell happen to it…oh this makes me smile!!! :):):)

Next thing you know he will be attending bluegrass festivals with campfires.:D

Those basses look great. I'd be like a little kid in a candy store in Arnold's shop. Great to hear the the symphony experience is going well, too. Pee, where you gonna eatcher turkey?

Dear Dono and Lou (and Schnitzy ;).)
The one thing here at TBDB that really bothers me is when these people go off topic. Embarrassing ****, that. Focus people!!!! What, 'zactly, is wrong wif yous?
And DURRL (who posed to be a MODERATOR :rollno: ) is the one who started all this ***. (See question posed to myownself above...by hisownself) should be given the infamous TB refraction points, big time, for this crap!
Now see what happen?....we gotta girl bluegrass bass player :eyebrow: in here now. I got the word that she and some weirdo they call the monkey :help: actually like them plywood thingy's and restore 'em as if they.....well, I won't say it, but you can read between the lines.

TEJANO! If you think telling that Montana Grizzly Bear Lover about this thread would be fun.....My :ninja: BOYZ will be out for ya real soon.

Ha! :eyebrow: They handed your ass on a silver platter didn’t they! :p You love it…all for the sake a of a lady friend. Pee you’ll be calling me for one of those plywood thingies to take to a festival while you go camping under the stars. Midnight jams around the campfire are just a weeeee bit different then a 2:00 am last call in a jazz club…the women still look better after midnight…not much changes there!

AND BTW…to get back on topic…those are two gorgeous basses at the beginning of the thread. Just beautiful works of art…there we are back on topic. :D

Soooo Pal :p .... You Really Like TB ..... HUH ??? You Are Way-Sick. Them Dono / Arnold special-education basses got nuthin' to do with anything ;) . But ... I sure want an AES plywoody for the the stuff I do.

Don't be too-skeered .... Put some white-out dots on the side (closest to you) on that lame-ass-bass you play. Wear an LED head-lamp in those Dark denver clubs so you know where you are. You will git it figgered-out.

Stick with 2-chorders .... Only G & D. NO FLAT-FIVES ... Only flat-7's. I'll Tell You What's Wrong with E & B. Them are for Bluesers and / or HillBillys with high-voices .... Or Maybe Idol Lambert-Fellers smoochin' Other-Boys on TV.

Say Now.... It seems that Gurls - From Denver .... Might have something to teach you. Now that the Horseys finally won another football game.

And if you scare-off the bluegrass fiddle girl .... Tell her I will meet her in Buffalo Wyoming July 11, 2010. I'm Old Too ... 58. The Grascals will be there ... With Gurl Banjerist Kristen Benson .... Awesome !!

Now .... I know-dick about playing jazz bass in dark-clubs ..... But ..... It sure is Fun to play simple on-time bass on fiddle-tunes and watch 20-couples dance their-arse-off for a 3-tune medley that lasts 16 minutes and have them get in your face afterward and clap. Try it .... You will like it.

Classy post, as usual Bob. :help:
BTW, Tejano. I hold you personally responsible for this bull ****.

Now that the Horseys finally won another game.

OUCHY.

And if you scare-off the bluegrass girl .... I will meet her in Buffalo Wyoming July 11, 2010 .... The Grascals ... Gurl Banjerist .... Awesome !!

First off, you misspelled girl. You like gurl.
Second off, don't go there. She ain't no "bluegrass girl". She can play be-bop right up yer
***. All 12 keys (no, not piano keys). Sight read fly ****. (that's where people actually write down them-there notes real complicated and such.)
She ain't easy to "scare", although, one look at a banjo she tends to move out right quick.
Dint I ever tell you how much I hate the word "awesome"?
I can see you now takin' a pee and sayin' "AWESOME!!!!"

EDIT: Last night was interesting. 7 ******* guitars playing at once plus a mandolin and a mandola. We saw a banjo case in the back (I almost shat). Luckily it dint leave it's case. An obnoxious cat names "Roscoe" had the ******* nerve to make a temporary home in my bass case. I hate cats as much as I hate kids.
I'll NEVER do this **** again.

.........She ain't easy to "scare", although, one look at a banjo she tends to move out right quick.

A joke told to me by an actual Bluegrass Banjo picker; "At a Bluegrass Festival how can you tell if the stage is level? The drool is coming out of both sides of the banjo player's mouth! :hiding:

Again......joke was told to me by an actual Bluegrass banjo player....Honest!:D:D:D

Classy post, as usual Bob. :help: ...

OK Paul ... I will go Grovel in my backyard for bones now .... Thanks for toning me DOWN. And TEJANO had nothing to do with what I had to say. But he is a Pal I know I can trust .... Even though I never met him ... Texas Ranger.

OUCH .... Of Course I know The Princess Girl can play every key / progression / Miles Davis line / Classical First Fiddle Chair in any orchestra ... And has no-need for Banjo. I Drink .... I Type ... Sometimes my Mentors have to Spank Me. I understand why you want to distance yourself from the likes of me .... And maybe even Tejano and MollyKay :p .... But Especially Me :D .

Or "What do you have when you get 32 banjo players together?"

A full set of teeth

"How do you get the banjo player off the front porch?"

Pay 'em for the pizza

"What do you say to the banjo player in the suit?"

Will the defendant please rise.

For more go to this link.

- As you may guess, I have a couple of banjo playing friends that I love to torment. My big secret is that I play a bit of banjo myself, don't tell no one.

My big secret is that I play a bit of banjo myself, don't tell no one.

Ron, you know that tune...."This is the End of A Beautiful Friendship"?
It's over between us.

EDIT: I hate to do this, but I'd like to go on topic with a question for Dono, Lou and/or Arnold. I'm curious about rib-depth measurements on those two basses. Neck-joint, C-bouts and end-pin. What?

Sorry PW, but if it helps I'm really not very good at it! I do seem to have less friends since I picked up that accursed thing. But it's addictive and now that I've lost a half a dozen teeth and 30 or so IQ points, I can't stop.

With no banjo and a mandola it sounds like you attended one of them artsy, fartsy Colorado hippie-type jams. You need to get the genuine, hard core bluegrass experience before you give up on them. Head on up to Montana and see Bob or back east to Molly & the Monkey or come on down here to Texas and we'll set you up right.

And to atone slightly for going way OT with this thread - both those basses are jaw droppers. I especially like the walnut (personal weakness). Very, very nice. I'd probably sell a kidney to get that one.

EDIT: I'd definately sell a kidney for the walnut. Don - how's your kidneys?

Hey Paul,

I'll get the tape measure out sometime this weekend and get back to you.

Lou, owner of one of "ahem", "Them Dono / Arnold special-education basses."
