2-step verification on multiple devices

I've been using 2-step via the verification app on my iPhone for a while. Then I added my iPad, and now it works there but I had to use a backup code on the iPhone. How can I get it to work on both devices?

as far as I'm aware these can only be used on one device at a time

Hmm. I use 2 step on 3 devices. 1 Android phone and 2 laptops and have never had an issue.

Do you use the google app to generate the codes? How did you set them up on TB?

It should work just fine on multiple devices. I use one Authenticator code key on desktop/laptop/phone. So the code Google Authenticator was giving you, refused to work on your iPhone?

When you added your ipad, did you generate a new 2-step key? If so, that's the problem. The same key should be used on all devices. The following option:

Should only be used if you're selling or getting rid of a device, as it will invalidate any previous code keys...
