A few weeks back, I picked up my first USA made Fender bass and I've been inspired to share a few thoughts. I've been playing bass and guitar as a hobby for over 20 years and I've had a variety of basses over the years including several Ibanez, a Rickenbacker, a Fender PBass Lyte Deluxe, etc. I've recently realized that a lot of my favorite recorded bass sounds are the classic precision, so I thought I should get one.
I won't go on and on, but this bass is really fantastic. It wasn't cheap, but I got a pretty good deal from Willcutt guitars ($1,100 brand new with a fantastic setup, case, etc). The bass is gorgeous (jade pearl metallic with maple board). The fit and finish are top notch. The fretwork is the best I've experienced and there is not a dead spot to be found on the neck. The weight is perfect (light but not super neck heavy), and the sound is everything I could want from a maple board precision.
I've never owned a USA Fender and I've had hit or miss experiences trying them in stores. However, I find it hard to believe that the likes of Lakland, Lull and others could do much to improve on this package.
