2013-2014 NHL playoffs thread.

I only got to watch the first 2 periods of the Pens game last night. They sure looked fine those two... so I'm not sure what happened in the 3rd. I'll have to catch some highlights when I get a bit of time here at work.
Also watched the Kings game. Wow. What a cool story to be following. It'll be cool to see if they pull it off and advance to the next round. I'll be watching that game tomorrow night for sure.
Tonight's game doesn't really interest me, but it'll be the only one on, so I'll be watching it :P.

Man, Penguins tried to give me a heart attack last night.

You know, I'm watching Malkin score his hat trick last night & looking at Pittsburgh's embarrassment of riches & I think it's crap that teams are rewarded in this league for being terrible. That f'n Pittsburgh team was brutal forever & now look at them. It's a joke.
The teams that don't make the playoffs should play a round robin tournament once the season is over to establish drafting positions. The team with the best record of that tournament should get the first pick. Tanking & mismanagement should not be rewarded.

Yeah, because the Penguins are the only team in the league that have two very good players, or had back to back #1 picks. You act like making your team suck for a few years guarantees you success. Look at the Oilers. If a team is legitimately terrible you think better teams should have better draft picks than them? Yeah, that makes sense.

Also, major contributor to Pens losing control of that game was losing both Sutter and Vitale. With only 10 forwards and unable to run their top 2 lines how they previously were, it was difficult to stop the inevitable late game surge by a desperate team. All that really matters is they won the series 4-2.

Because punishing teams for being bad just creates a greater disparity between the rest of the league, kills markets and eventually destroys teams, causing a negative impact on the NHL as a whole? And you're not gifted a future. The Oilers had three straight years of #1 picks and they're still one of the worst teams in the league.

Rewarding teams for being bad encourages bad teams to get really bad. We've seen that this year in Philadelphia with the 76ers. It seems to me that a better system would be one that encourages teams that are out of contention to continue to compete, rather than throwing in the towel and tanking.

It's not "punishing" them, it's just not rewarding them. The have-nots nowadays trade away their better guys at the deadline to actually get worse on purpose to move up draft positions. Intentionally losing. That makes more sense? I'm sure the STH are happy.

Edmonton would be a fine mess in any system.

Turned away from the Penguins/Blue Jackets game last night at the start of the third to watch other stuff. Came back to the game with about 6 minutes to go. I missed all the excitement of the comeback!

Only one game on tonight. With a Flyers wion, we'd have 3 game sevens tomorrow night.

Beautiful goals by the Kings last night!

Congrats to all who advanced. A few exciting game 7's coming up, & a game 6 for Rangers/Flyers should be great tonight. Who wants to play Pitt more than these two? Great playoffs thi syear.

What's unfortunate, to me at least, is that Boston and Montreal have to meet in the second round. I think both of those teams are better than PIT, PHI, or NYR, but because of the new bracket system in the playoffs, one of those three Metropolitan teams will be in the eastern conference finals.

Boston v Montreal--original six! LA vs habs in the final --I take back my prediction of Bos. It was Montreal that ruined our first trip to the finals in 93. Rematch!

just look at this 93 Kings roster you'll recognize a few names

Why doesn't it? If you're legitimately terrible, it's your own damn fault. You shouldn't be gifted a future just because you suck. just because the status quo is what it is doesn't mean it's automatically sensible.
It's something all the team owners decided would be in all their best interests. When a team does poorly, hopefully, a good top draft pick can help their team in the future. Mainly, because team owners know they aren't always going to be on top and would want a hand out when at the bottom of the barrel.
