Last year was a lot of bass buying and selling for me. But to be honest, it didn't include a lot of practice, playing, gigging or creativity as I had intended, or at least hoped for.
I'm not a big 'New Year Resolutions' guy, but I decided begin the process of setting some goals for the upcoming year. Here's a few…
1) Stop buying and selling guitars and basses. I played a lot of nice basses last year, but also lost more $$ than I paid. It's not fun anymore. So I'm just gonna move on to goal #2.
2) Turn off the GAS and be content. I have some beautiful keeper basses. 3 Elricks, a Nash and a Bluesman Vintage rebuild that cover my every need.
3) Write a song every month. This is something I used to do. It's an excellent habit because it fosters creativity. Even if it's a not-so-great song, it doesn't matter. A writer writes, always.
4) Record that song every month. Laying it down makes it real. It also helps refine the writing process into something more tangible. Plus it's fun to play with arrangements.
5) Be intentional about collaboration and playing. Last year, I waited for the phone to ring and it did. But the guys I normally play with were covid-shy and didn't feel like dealing with it all. So we didn't gig, jam or even get together to write/hang very often. That phone goes two ways, right?
These are just a few of the things I've had running around in my head. They're not really in 'goal' stage yet. I'm sure there are others I should consider.
Anyone else considering new year goals? Please share.
