Progress report. Dec 30 2021 I put on old set of spiros on gigging bass. Have done 11 gigs since then ranging from duo to Latin jazz septet. Spiros have delivered on every gig. Good clarity amplified and acoustic. Even Arco solos, though not as warm sounding in acoustic settings as oliv G and D were. Have first classical reh tonight and thinking of using same bass. We'll see.

No pictures, no new bass.

I had a gig Thursday in a big room, tall ceilings, big stage. Strange things happened on this gig, the least of which is that I had my amp directly on the floor and it was boomy. I moved it onto a chair for the second set and it was much better. Oh, and I played on the sidewalk accoustic in between (told you...strange things)

But, the Spirocores we're great all the way through. At the worse, I could still hear and feel the note and at the best, there was warmth and growl and sticcato and sustain, whatever I asked them for. Really excellent strings.

But, I admit that I miss the feel of the Perpetuals, which also sound very good.

Take it easy buddy. The Perpetual challenge isn't scheduled till 2023.

Although I respectfully declined the invitation to be "in" for the Spiro Challenge. I am thoroughly enjoying the Spiros on my Upton Super Swing (3 slightly used Mitts I got from @AGCurry & a Stark G) . Back in 2007 when I got the bass, Upton said it was set up with Spiros. I just took those strings off my Czech Flatback because I really wanted to try my EP Slaps on it. I'm glad I did. Both basses offer my hands and ears different perspectives to enjoy and learn from.

I’ve had my first major temptation. I’ve been eagerly following Mimmo’s thread about creating a replica of the Golden Spirals and am now very tempted try out his metal wound Red Springs D and G. As someone who’s teacher wise 1 generation removed from Charlie Haden through Darek Oles, being able to try something close to Golden Spirals is very very tempting. Particularly if I may be able to bow them in an orchestra. I’m not out yet though. Just holding on. I’ll still keep Spiros on my A E and B strings if I fall.

Right there with you!

Well, since I never accepted the challenge in the first place I’ll report back and tempt you when I get mine. As much as I love Spirocore, I found that by putting Obligatos on my D and G warmed up the sound and gave better bow response while maintaining the overall growl and sustain. As a fan of Charlie Haden’s sound, I’ve found that this set is a little too bright on my new (to me) La Scala Hybrid, so I’m going to try the Red Springs Metal with the Series 16 Basses (I’d keep the Spiro E&A but aesthetically would prefer to have everything the same color, and I’m curious to see how they sound). Spirocore are always my fall back if I try something and don’t like them, especially the E and A strings.

I will definitely be reading your thoughts on them! Especially with how smooth the copper windings are, especially on the G. I was a fan of the Velvet Animas, but the G was always so finicky to bow.

Overall I’m completely satisfied with a full set of Spiro Mittels on both of my basses. They really do give me everything I need. But man studying with Darek Oles in college made me fall in love with the Spiro/gut combo sound. I was tempted the whole time to make the switch, but held back since I do play in orchestras and chamber groups often. Now that this Golden Spiral and Red O Ray revival is at hand thanks to Mimmo, and that there’s a pair of strings that could be usable for arco and get that famous pizz sound, that Spiro/gut hankering is back stronger than ever. If I fail the challenge, it’ll at least be for the next best string combo after a full set of Spiros.

My check-in. I'm happy overall with my fresh set of matching Spircores. Not too bright. Giving me what I need arco and pizz. The pitch clarity and stability is just astonishing, which I think helps me play in tune.

I am having an old injury recur, which concerns me. I don't blame Spirocores for it, but the last time this came up it derailed my playing for most of a year and I'm determined not to let that happen again.

I'm on my way to a PT appointment now and have fingers crossed for a good result. But, my tail silks are all still flaming red.

My memory isn’t that great but I do recall getting the impression that you had switched to a softer string years ago as to not aggravate that kind of issue.

That’s why my “jump” from 4/4 to 3/4 Weichs was risky for me too - but I think I’ve settled in and no adverse effects so far … but I can definitely feel that “tennis elbow twinge” on either arm if I dig in too much for too long.
