The new strings might be all “it’s new” hype. Notice the Spirocores keep coming back in popularity, but so many other strings are just okay. Obligatos do blend well with Spirocore, if you want something closer to gut on top with the same texture on the outer wrap.I will definitely be reading your thoughts on them! Especially with how smooth the copper windings are, especially on the G. I was a fan of the Velvet Animas, but the G was always so finicky to bow.
Overall I’m completely satisfied with a full set of Spiro Mittels on both of my basses. They really do give me everything I need. But man studying with Darek Oles in college made me fall in love with the Spiro/gut combo sound. I was tempted the whole time to make the switch, but held back since I do play in orchestras and chamber groups often. Now that this Golden Spiral and Red O Ray revival is at hand thanks to Mimmo, and that there’s a pair of strings that could be usable for arco and get that famous pizz sound, that Spiro/gut hankering is back stronger than ever. If I fail the challenge, it’ll at least be for the next best string combo after a full set of Spiros.
Switched from old weichs back to old(er) mittels today. Great to feel the power again!
Yes I made this same change recently. Both sets offer something that the other doesn’t, but the mittels power and depth is very seductive.Threw some mittles on a couple days ago, and man is my Juzek singing! After having weichs on for a while Iam really surprised how much more fundamental there is and overall volume, even with the mittels a bit lower. It did bring out some buzzing up high in the fingerboard, so she had go into see the luthier- long overdue. I can’t wait to get her back! Can’t stop thinking of those mittels!
Would you mind describing what the weichs offer to someone who's only tried mittels? I am noticing lots of excitement from people making the switch you just did, and not much talk about going the other direction.Yes I made this same change recently. Weichs lack the heft & depth of mittels but they make up for it (to me) with a more open sound — in other words, they project differently. Mittels have that depth but it’s a more compressed(?) sound.Would you mind describing what the weichs offer to someone who's only tried mittels? This is a big factor. Only one way to find out …You have to match the strings to the bass and setup

My one and only bass likes both gauges.
