But just for fun, I thought to myself, if I could have any new bass, what would it be? After some thought, I decided it would be incredible to have a custom-made Dingwall. Think about it, fanned-frets, custom top, Glockenklang or maybe even a Darkglass pre. My mouth started watering. So I reached out and just got an email back.

Build time: 2.5 YEARS!!

Even if I wanted to buy one, I wouldn't have it til mid-2025! Good grief, I'd change my mind 68 times before it was done.

Reach out to a dealer. They purchase build slots and the delivery times are often much, much shorter than what the factory can quote.

I don't think I'd be willing to wait more than about 6 months. If I'm paying the price for custom-made, one of the customizations I'd demand would be to have the instrument in my hands before I die.

I've been waiting 20 years for the opportunity to own a fretless Wal, so a long build time wouldn't be an issue for me.

I'm on month 16 of a Fodera and expect my MTD to exceed that. No problem for me. Haven't changed my mind about specs either!

Ridiculous .. they should at least commit on the bass’ ETA accepting to discount its final price by a daily fee of at least 150 USD per day of delay
Jokes aside, it’s a too long, unbearable waiting time .. it’s obvious that they to hire and train more people .. it seems like two times and a half the Fender CS waiting time

I waited 19 months for this bass. It was worth every minute. Canadian Dingwalls really deliver.

Good recommendation on seeking a build spot with a dealer.

Sorry, but I don’t believe you. We’ll be seeing an NBD from you some time this year. At least one. You can always sell to fund the next purchase, right?

Don’t know how long I’d be willing to wait. Maybe I’d be patient enough for the 4 yr wait for a Wal but can’t even put a deposit down on one now. For something like that, have to put down the deposit and then just go about your life trying your best not to think about it.

Yeah, on Thomann EU a lot of basses I was considering just not too long ago changed from "In stock in a few weeks" to "In stock in 5-6 weeks" to "In stock in 5-6 months" to "Contact us about this product" in yellow colour to "Currently unavailable".

People were foolishly saying that the supply chain issues are going away. Lol. I guess a lot of people are willfully blind to the fact that a lot of points in the chain might either take a very long time to get anywhere close to what they were or might not come back at all, due to covid/climate change.

But, you know, what do I know. I'm just another lady on the internet.

I haven’t ordered a custom build for 25 years, but if I were to go that route, I would prefer a little less of a wait. But if that’s how far they’re backed up, so be it. Fortunately I am done with buying basses.

I am in the process of having my first custom bass built for me. I've seen the guys work and actually purchased a used bass that he had built so I know what to expect. He warned me that it might be a little slow. When I asked how long he said "3 months". Granted this isn't Dingwall but there are builders that work on a faster timeline. I figured 6 months originally so I will chalk this up as a win, so far.

I was quoted 6 months and it ended up taking 2 years for a modulus. Worth the wait

lol are you kidding? I'm into TONE, not frittering away $ better spent when I already found the Holy Grail and then it's even bigger and better brother ...for slightly more than NYC cab fare at the Happy Holidays. I have never heard a mega bux modern bass that had my kind of tone, but viva la difference, that's why we have disposable incomes and I've spent a Dingwal's worth of cash to get to this point and am finally done.

Supply and demand yo. They're selling like hot cakes, and I really didn't get the hype and indeed was sorta put off by it until I tried one out and... well, now I own an ABZ 5 and it's the best bass I own (and I'm blessed enough to own some real world-class basses...)

Dealers usually have booked slots for builds, so going through one of them you can usually grab something a LOT quicker.

If I'm going totally direct, I'll accept up to a 2 year build time. Any more than that and there's a chance my requirements might change.

The bass I had built took six weeks. That was long enough. At the end of the day it’s down to the builder. If they have enough staff they can build a house in six weeks. But as the economy dries up they take on more orders and less staff to meet profit targets leaving us twiddling our thumbs instead of slapping them.

2,5 years seems a little long for me to wait on a bass. I'd say a year tops - but I'd prefer to talk to the builder and have them start more or less immediately.
