It’s not that I’m impatient, I’m just not very particular. I’ve played dozens of production instruments that would keep me happy for a lifetime.

I prefer to try first, so once I meet a contender, it might take me a couple hours to decide. A couple weeks shipping time if I wanna do a parts build. I’m also very happy with the stable ATM and thinking of buying in general gives me a sour feeling!

Jokes aside, it’s a too long, unbearable waiting time .. it’s obvious that they to hire and train more people .. it seems like two times and a half the Fender CS waiting time

In their defense, the email said they were looking to hire new staff which could shorten wait times. But that could also just be them trying to soften the blow of having to quote 2 1/2 years.

What would be interesting is to know, is the factors leading to that type of wait... a snapshot, right now, of the size of their staff, and how many they have in the pipeline.

Haha. I deserve that. Cool thing is, there’s nothing on my rack I want to sell right now. I’m really happy with my setup. The only bass-related thing I could see me buying in the next year or two would be if I wanted to upgrade my upright. But a year’s a long time. I guess we’ll see.

Who knows if I'll even have fingers or a brain in 2025. I made my first custom order for anything last month when I ordered a cabinet from RevSound. I've been fretting that I picked the wrong color/configuration ever since.

Someday, I'd like a custom bass, but I'm not really into the mystique of a coveted instrument that takes an extra-long time. OTOH, try before you buy might be overrated. Out of 6 instruments I currently own, one was purchased sight unseen on TB, three were used on Reverb. One was a Craigslist ad for a baritone guitar that I was gonna buy no matter what as long as it wasn't defective, and one I bought in a store. Plenty of guitars and basses that I thought were love at first play have come and gone in the interim.

I waited about 14 months for my custom Skjold Zia 6 string, and it was well worth it. Of course, I already owned two of Pete's basses before, so I knew what I was getting. Of course when it showed up, all my expectations were blown out of the window and I couldn't have been happier. Pete's work is absolutely amazing!

I usually assume 12 - 18 months minimum for a good custom build, but more than two years? Ouch. On the plus side, that gives you plenty of time to save up for the balance on the instrument. My recent down payment on my custom Fodera was great because it'll leave me plenty of time to save up, with the 19 month wait time. :smug:

Everyone that has ordered custom Dingwalls I've read about has gushed about their orders, and have had no regrets about the wait time or the price.

I waited six or seven months for a stock Ibanez. I can't imagine ever thinking I was good enough to warrant a custom build. But if I did, I'd try find someone who could deliver within a year. I could be dead in three.
