Where can you buy copper shielding for $3.00? I would love to buy a lot for that price.

Go to StewMac. Buy a roll for seven bucks and use less than half of it on a Jazz.

If you were to purchase all said parts, you'd pay a lot more than $30 for them. That's what I'm pricing, not what he paid, since I don't actually know.

Well, if you buy the parts at the first place you come too, sure you'll pay more. If you buy them at an electronics shop they're almost dirt cheap. And if I was going to buy a high mass bridge I'd add another $10 and opt for a Gotoh 201 instead of some questionable quality knockoff.

Seeing as he's running a business, I'm sure it would be worthwhile for him to do all that and charge you cost on all of it. Sounds like a great way to make a living.

I would not expect cost, but a $300+ markup on a $90 bass is a bit much. I'm not trying to begrudge the guy a chance at making money from his efforts at all. I buy Fender necks and bodies, rebuild them with quality parts (including the Gotoh and BadAss bridges) and sell them for a hundred or two dollar profit myself.

If you think it's a ripoff, don't buy it.

The straplock buttons, you're right it's not $20 if it's just the buttons.

The bridge is over $20 by itself, it doesn't matter what he gets them for, it matters what YOU can get it for as a consumer, not a retailer.

If you think it's a ripoff, don't buy it. But his pricing isn't quite as far out there as some make it to be, that's all I'm saying. I think the body is more than anyone would pay for it, but the neck isn't so far off considering what's done to it.

I've done many of the mods listed on the body to my SX myself.

I have my invoice from the local electronics shop showing 3$ a pot for 500k CTS audio taper (add another one for a jazz), 0.95$ for an orange drop .47uF, 2.50 for a switchcraft jack.

I may be buying copper shielding from Amzon ( http://www.amazon.com/DiMarzio-Copper-Shielding-Tape-x3-1/dp/B000H17WKI). 9.99 and it probably does more than one jazz bass (24" by 31/2" wide.) But assume it's enough for just one.

Grand Tally (3x3 + 0.95 + 2.50 + 9.99 + 16.00 + 7) = 45.34. If you're paying 90$ for these parts wholesale, you're actually trying to overpay. Some people might justify the expense because they don't have the necessary tools/skills to solder, change a bridge, screw on buttons, but really, for someone with very basic mechanical skills such as myself, this is very much overpriced.

The neck on the other hand is not so bad. Fretleveling, dressing, polishing, changing and filing a nut are all skills that need much more specialized/costly tools and that don't necessarily come easy to most. If the work is good, why not ?

You forgot the Hipshot string retainer! And you're absolutely right, it is more than anyone with basic skills to do these things would probably pay for an SX body. Now that I go back and look I did pay around $55 for all the above upgrades when I did it to my first SX years ago. I was just throwing together a quick list of the prices you see from the most common websites. Leave it to the TB folks to be much more efficient than that and call me out!

My point was not everyone can or wants to do work on things themselves. A lot of the best musicians I know can barely change their own strings. For such people it's not that bad of a price considering I know it'd be done right and the product you get at the end is quality. It would be really hard to convince anyone that it's worth it, though, when they see an $89 price tag on a complete bass. I think that was the OPs reaction in making this thread.

But here's the rub: It is not a BASS that he is selling on eBay for $430; it is a NECK and a BODY. No strings (add another $20-25 for a halfway decent set) and not set up, intonated, etc. So it STILL needs work! Now you're over $500 for an SX.

Exactly.

No one's saying that it's not quality work, but if you're spending $500 then why are you looking at an SX?
