2nd Build

Right, lets resurrect this thread :)

I have now finished my exams and have plenty of time to start putting some time in to this bass.

However, I need to some help choosing a bridge...

The current contenders are as follows:

Gotoh 201 5 String bridge

or

Fender American Deluxe Series / American Series / Standard Series 5 string bridge

Which would you guys go for and why? I have all of the other parts except for the tuning heads (which are most likely going to be Hipshot Ultralights but with the clover leaf tuning peg) and the string tree

I would love some input / advice here guys

This is going to have either an oiled Ash finish with a black pick guard, or I might try a stain using vinegar and rusty nails that I was told about at a design show today :)

I think I'm going to go with the Gotoh bridge as it is easier to get hild of and is a heavier piece

What are everybodies thoughts on the blue LED in what is normally the jack socket to indicate that the preamp is on? :)

I like the idea. But maybe you could use one of those battery charge indicators as the source.

You might even be able to have it be one color for normal preamp on, and another for low battery. Just thinking out loud.
Good luck with your build!

Right, bit of a back story to fill in here :hmm:

Basically, I graduated from college last year but have had very little time for hobby builds due to various different sickness' in the family, but now I am finally able to start working on this again alongside working towards my degree at University.

Not a lot has changed on the bass since my last post... Still using a maple neck with maple fingerboard, jazz bass pickups, Jaguar Preamp, etc.

However, I have no decided to stain the body black with a black pickguard. I saw this combination (Black/Black/Maple and black dots) on the Fender website with one of the 'Workshop Select' Jazz basses and really liked it.

So far, I have the body glued up (as shown in previous posts) and have started forming all of the routing templates. After this week, I have 4 months off Uni for summe vacation, so hopefully this should all be done and perhaps another build or two as well :)

Cheers for reading guys, I shall put up some photos later on to show this isn't going to remain a dead thread ;)

Bit of progress on this now that exams are out of the way and I have about 4 months with no Uni work :smug:

I cut the body template to the final shape and started making neck pocket and pickup templates. After these were done, I mocked up the design with the bridge and pickups in their final places, only to find that they were meant for a bass with a larger string spacing (18.5/19mm), when the neck I have is really meant for a 17mm spacing.

I have since bought a new bridge with the correct spacing and, after a bit of research and AutoCAS mockups, decided to go for Seymour Duncan Basslines SJ5-3 Quarter Pounder pickups. Hopefully (and assuming the measurments I found on several places on line are correct), these should fit with the new neck perfectly.

Other then that, I now have the tuner heads en route and have started making the final templates for the body. Hopefully I should get everything sorted in the next few days and be able to start cutting into the body blank. I'll post some pictures when there is something worth photographing
