Au contraire. The crossover frequency is entirely dependant on the driver impedance. A nominal 8 ohm woofer might exhibit an actual impedance of 8 ohms at 500 Hz, 12 ohms at 2 kHz and 16 ohms at 4kHz. This can throw off the resulting crossover frequency by a half-octave or more. One way to get around that problem is to use an impedance flattener (zobel) but the better method is to use the component values dictated by the actual impedance at the crossover frequency.For a bass speaker, I doubt the difference is going to be drastic.
To the OP, the reason I suggested using an existing design that has been tested and proven to work is just that: it's been tested and proven to work. On the face of it designing a speaker from scratch seems a simple enough proposition, but that's quite far from the reality of the situation.
