2x15 vs. 8x10

Wow. Zombie thread....

10 x 3.14 = 31.4 square inches of surface area per 10" speaker. (Approximately). 15 x 3.14 = 48.1 square inches of surface area for a 15.
8 x 31.4 = 251 square inches for an 8x10s
2 x 48.1 = 96.2 square inches for 2x15s.
Then you have to take into account that the are 8 voice coils driving 8x10s, less mass, more punch. Only 2 for the 2x15s. Just some math and facts and stuff.. hehe.

Surface area of a circle is pi r squared. And I said "approximately", (not taking into account it's not exactly 10" and the fact that it's cone shaped actually adds a bit more area.) Most 10" speakers have a 1.5" to 3" VC and most 15s have a 2" to 3" VC. So, 2 average size voice coils to 8 average size VC would drive the 10s (less mass, lighter cones) more easily hence more punch. Of course dependent on the cabinet style. (sealed, ported and interior volume).
 
Lots of misinformation, the area of a circle is computed by the formula; radius squared times pi(3.
14), aka pie are square, for example, a 10" would be 5x5x3.14=78.5, a 15" speaker area would be 7.5x7.5x3.14=176.6, air moved by an 8x10 would be 628", for a 2x15 would be 353.2". The actual air displacement would be the same for a circle as a cone since the cone moves in the same dimension as flat. I'm partial to 15&18 speakers, generally sound better to me, a 2x15 is a good choice unless you want to carry more. Cab design makes a huge difference in efficiency and response, generally ported and larger will be more bottom and more efficient but many takes on that.
 
another way to measure the mighty SVT 810 is that it is the only single cabinet that can match the 100 watt Marshall 812 stack and get that volume with a clean(ish) tone. It will take 2 215 cabinets to almost equal that. No one is allowed to play that loud anymore...

Correct, the area of a circle is pi r squared. But the calculation you did was "2 pi r" instead of "pi r squared". RonEW gave the right calculation for pi r squared.

"pi r squared" = area of a circle
"2 pi r" = perimeter of a circle
I've seen the two formulas get crossed. It's not an uncommon mistake.

Okay in those days we did play loud. But now we bassists can play clean and very loud. Without distortion loud from bass is different. 1500W is different than the visual distortion the 2000s could make with two or four JBL D140s. I think it is unnecessary to say you have to use one Sunn 2x15 cab vs SVT cab. We bought a whole Sunn 2000s head two cab set if our mate had a whole Marshall 100w lead with two 4x12 cabs. The two cab 4 JBL 15" set was capable of clear hifi bass that the SVT doesn't do.
 
Clearly, the only solution is an 8x10 *and* 2x15s.

And that figure varies a lot between different model drivers of the same nominal basket diameter (hole size).

Surface area of the CONE (Sd, not area of the basket) x Xmax (maximum excursion) = Vd

Guessing surface area of the cone by a calculation of area of the basket diameter will yield a large error and ignores Xmax. The above two speakers have an Sd of just over 2/3 of the area of a 15" circle. Xmax can vary by over 100%.

Have you seen the new Ford GT? 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine making 647 hp (482 kW; 656 PS) and 550 lb·ft (746 N·m) of torque.
The previous model had 5.4 L Modular V8 engine is all-aluminum with a Lysholm twin screw-type supercharger. Power output is 550 hp (410 kW; 558 PS) at 6500 rpm and generates 500 lb·ft (678 N·m) of torque.

I've owned and used both for lengths of time and would take SVT 8 x 10's over Sunn 2000S cabs, they were real cool and I'd like them back but the SVT's are much cleaner and tighter sounding to me. The JBL's really couldn't handle a lot of power either.

I wouldn't have either now. The JBLs would go into that Mountain type distortion way too easily. I'm the guy who heard a Showman and loved that sound until it went away at 3 on the volume dial. The highs, mids and lows that Sunns could do were my grail. However that went away into distortion. The SVT came along and gave us that on stage punch but had it's own form of grit which I don't favor. It's all subjective because I may need that sound in a particular genre of music tomorrow.:)
