3-finger exercises, tips

Recently I've started trying to get my 3rd finger goin on my right hand. After 10 years of strictly 2-fingered playing though, I'm finding it tough to incorporate that 3rd digit. Does anyone have any tips or know any good exercises I can do?

Metronome = 30-40 BPM
Slow is the key to fast. when you are awesome at slow, then turn up the BPMs 1-5 increments.
see post #2 about Accent Beats. (and searching)

Again; Slow is your friend, my friend.
Start as the turtle, when you chase the hare.
Be positive (with the slow) and then find songs that you can utilize the technique with so it can remain fun. fun is always better then suckage. and fast will be failure IMO.

Any one that wants to use more plucking fingers needs to youtube Doc Watson. That guy is a phenomenal finger guitar picker. He only uses this thumb and index finger. Am I talking apples and oranges here. Of course!!! Point is, the over the top pickers don't use that ring finger.

A few years ago I took some finger style guitar lessons. Improved my bass playing 300% (speed and agility).

There is no wrong way to play music. If you want to use your elbows, go right ahead.

A smart man listens to advise from everyone but lets no one tell him what to do.

I've been trying to master this technique for years. Some things that I think have helped me are to practice using just your ring and middle finger. What's probably giving you the most trouble with the "3 finger technique" is the cordination with those 2 fingers. If you notice, playing with ring and index is finger is a whole lot easier than the middle and ring. (although you should make sure each "2-fingers" together play as good as the next "2-fingers" together)

A Tip...
If you have a neck pickup it's a lot easier to make it sound consistent if you pluck right over it.

You can look for videos of Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse he made a three finger technique except you are supposed to count to four so your pointer starts as one and ends on four then your middle finger starts as one ending on four and so on on each finger
