Tell me about the Chromatron v. the others.

I've had the Chromatron, Wonderlove (v2) and Micro-Tron III.

I never bonded with the Wonderlove. I can't remember why exactly, but I just remember hating the damn thing.

The Micro-Tron was too quacky for my taste. Also, pancake-styled patch cables wouldn't fit in the pedal and it pissed me off.

The Chromatron was by far my favourite. My only complaint was the size, but even then, it fit perfectly sideways on a Pedaltrain Nano.

Sold the Chromatron because I didn't need it and because someone was willing to pay a lot for it.

Also had the Spectrum. It sounded good, but there were too many cons. The switch was loud and clunky. The desktop app was poopie (although the iOS app was great) and not intuitive. Unless whoever made the patch made a recording, you had to burn the patches onto the pedal to test them. Most patches didn't have descriptions and those that did didn't say much. Unless you went and edited the patches, you couldn't know which knob did what...

My favourite filter is the MF 101. But it also has its share of issues (huge, centre-positive, needs to be in a loop, etc.). I plan to try the Iron Ether next.

Managed to snag a used mint Proton V4 a couple of months back - the prices of new 3Leaf gear are even more eye watering over here in the UK!

I've also have a GR2 - a great filter and one which I prefer to several other quality filters I've previously had: MXR BEF, Fwonkbeta, Aguilar Filter Twin. Although the Fwonkbeta, in particular, ran the GR2 close.

The Proton V4 feels like it's captured the essence of the GR2 in a more compact package (always welcome for those of us with limited pedal board space!) and it's pretty easy to dial in a good sound.

Any comments on proton v3? I might be buying one.

I currently have and use a V3 Proton. I’ve had and used all of the Protons up to the 3rd version (including prototypes). I’ve also had GRs, GR2s, and a couple of Wonderloves. And, I’ve been using a Proton V3 for a while now. I like it well enough… has the right amount enveloping for the roots/funk music I’m doing. It’s not a synth tool (I use a IE XeroD for that on another board. I haven’t tried a V4 Proton. If Spenser ever gets around to releasing more, I’ll try it. But in the meantime, if you can get a V3 Proton, I say do it.
