3 mins of David Dyson goodness

I had the pleasure of seeing David Dyson when he was MeShell Ndegeocello’s twice during g the late 1990’s.
Anybody notice the fin behind him at about the 3.05 minute mark?
He's really got something going on. His right hand technique is difficult to watch. I'm nowhere near that league...
My takeaway is that it must be truly great because it cuts through on the soundcard of this Droid phone. I'll have to listen to it again on my car stereo!
What bass is that? Sounds like a jazz but doesn't look recognizable to me on my phone.

David plays Skjold basses.
Been an endorser for many years. He's, in my opinion, the most melodic player and soloist in funk, r&b and smooth jazz music. I don't hear many players make as much use of the B string while slapping like he does. He kills!

3 minutes of it ? that seemed like a lot. I recognize the technical skill, but I have to say it's not my thing at all .... particularly for so long.

I would just add that, for me, even with players who I have very deep appreciation for, I wouldn't be up for such a long solo section.

His cable situation is giving me stress. When's it gonna pull out of the head? Can we undo that tangle?
This is amazing, though. I don't think I could play that long without looking at my bass about 1,000 times... much less slap that confidently without missing anything... at all.

You would really hate Scott Ambush from Spyro Gyra. He's had solo's of up to 8 minutes!!
ha, crazy. Please don't take my comment in a way I did not intend. I really do recognize the technical skills of these players that allows them to do these extended solo things. I can totally get into a great bass solo too, but I just can't get wrap my ears around more than one verse/chorus of it.
I saw a YT (I think) of a Tom Kennedy solo that was crazy long and unbelievably note packed, and I really dig TK's playing, but I just could not listen to it ... too much of a good thing maybe ?? Just a personal thing I guess.
I totally get it. I was into the 'solo' bass thing at one time but it became over exposed. Now everyone is a solo bassist. I dig Marcus Miller, David Dyson and similar bassists that perform melodically and not the crazy super fast wankery blur of notes type of thing. I'm so NOT a fan of Mohini Dey. What she does is just pure wankery IMHO. More power to those who dig it. I don't even like soloing anymore.
I have to agree. About 45 seconds of a bass solo and I'm ready for the song to resume. People who know I play bass laugh at my ranting of long bass solos.
I admire Mohini Dey’s skills, but here solos have gotten really boring. It’s she is practicing scales as fast as she can.
I tuned into David Dyson when I was forced to watch and listen to New Kids on the Block working at a group home.
Loved his playing and funky grooves made me a Big fan...and enjoy NKITB ...as long as Dyson was playing!!
