Hello all, this thread may become long winded so I'll start with the main question and add others in at the end and save you having to read til the end if you don't want to.
If I wanted to add a single coil Pbass pup (not a split P p'up) at the neck of my jazz bass (mudbucker position) and keep the 2 single coils jazz p'ups would I need to reverse wind one of the pickups?... like on a start, to prevent phase cancellation or is running 3 true single coils just not practical?
Now the back story and other phase related questions:
I ask because I've recently added a Bartolini MM humbucker between the 2 single coil pups of my 5 string and have been having phase trouble when it comes to getting the most of out the coil combinations. In it's current wiring I can get the neck J pup and neck coil of the MM in phase to make a cool humbucker tone (as well as each coil individually) and the same for the bridge J and bridge coil of the MM (and each coil individually), I can also use the MM in series on it's own but I cannot combine the 2 Jazz single coils together to get the "normal both p'ups on full" jazz tone because they are out of phase with each other in order to be in phase with the Mm p'ups coils. I chose to have them wired this way for now because I like the joint J+MM humbucking tones a lot and I'm not to be too bothered about not having the jazz series tone for now, however it's a tone I do miss form time to time so would like a way of accessing it.
If I wanted to have both Jazz pickups on together (no MM coils involved) would I need to add a phase switch to change one of the Jazz pups so that they were then in phase with each other? How easy is this to do?
I love the 5 strings new tones but feel I could get more out of the bass if I could use both Jazz p'ups together. ATM when I try and run both together they sound very quiet and thin sounding, at least 1/3 of the output of the other options.
Also I apologise if I've used any incorrect terminology, I'm not an electrician or wiring guru just a budding modder and so don't know if what I call phase is actually phase etc.
