Though there is no "rule" that specifically defines maple and quilted maple as being different, we did discuss it. The general consensus was that the two pieces of maple should look like they could have come from the same piece of lumber, even if they didn't. It's not a hard and fast rule, and I don't want it to discourage anyone from entering. On the other hand, a good deal of the high quality quilted maple is from Western Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum), while rock maple (common for necks) is from Sugar Maple trees (Acer saccharum). I recognize that it's a narrow distinction, and I'm personally inclined not to care about it that much.

So...basically...I look forward to seeing you in the voting poll!

I may have to drop out of the competition. The end date is coming up and I've got way too much on my plate right now. School comes first, then the girlfriend, then family, then this bass and then myself... So, it's on the backburner for now.

It will be at least 2 weeks before I can get back to my workshop, and with the amount of work I have left to complete, I don't think I can possibly make it in time. Regardless, I wish all of the other entries the best of luck, there are some really amazing projects coming out of the woodwork.

Happy working,

Ron
