35" Scale on a budget

+1

It's funny how few people do this. I discovered it when I got a compressor pedal with an Eq section. Wow! I suddenly had an active fretless P-bass.

A great choice is the Tech21 ParaDI. It rolls the Sansamp RPM together with a DI in pedal form. It even handles piezo pickups on upright, violin, or guitar.

Yeah I honestly feel like it is the best possible way to get an amazing tone on a budget. Passive basses are generally easier to get at a lower price and generally record a lot easier.

Then you add any outboard pre you want - and those are usually ~$200 or so.

I almost spent $1700 on a Fender J Deluxe..instead I got a used lakland passive J, a Tone hammer 500 and a sadowsky pre and spent less on all 3 products than I would have on that 1 bass.

I personally did not like the electronics on the Lakland 4401. I played it and thought they were not that good and would need an upgrade. I feel like you could get a really nice used passive 5er for $500 though.

These guys couldn't agree less:

Yeah but being seen with a Schecter is like being seen with a neck tattoo, and Diamond P sounds like a pro-wrestling move...
Ha...Interesting perception you have.

They are great basses and I gig/play them along with other brands associated to higher end instruments products as well.

These things are sleepers, don't let them fool You.

I know that and you certainly know that, but look at their website for godsakes.

LOL that was funny....Well they do market to certain audiences, true.

I have used my Diamond 5s in straight up jazz trios, but also in a grindy rock situation.

That back pickup makes all the difference in the world and of course that 35" scale does not hurt the clarity situation. You should hear mine that I had Fralins and Nordstrand pre put in...Its sings and its punchy as hell.

PS I have don't have neck tattoos.

If that is the bar that we use to measure the quality of basses and gear, take a look at the Ampeg site sometime. Or Alembic.

I'm NOT a Scheckie die hard. I really don't care for any of their offerings that are "non-retro", but the Diamond P, J, and Model-T are incredible.

I'm not trying to argue either. If someone wants to narrow what interests them in bass gear down based on what other people think or a website isn't aesthetically pleasing to them, thats OK.
