4 string Precision body shape with Jazz bass pickups

So as it says in the title I'm wanting a precision body with jazz pickups, does anyone know of any weird offshoot model Fender maybe did? The only one I've ever seen is a 5 string precision Squier used to make, but its also a 5'er.

Not exactly a P body but G&L does the JB2 which is pretty darn close.

All else fails you can make your own from any PJ bass. You just need a new pick guard cut with a J pickup route, remove any wood that stands in your way, wire in the new pickups. Easy peasy.

I'd add the Yamaha SuperBass 500S. Body is not exactly P but overall feel and practicality is "symmetrical".



Also own (and love) a MarkBass GV (already mentioned) but in 5 strings. Nice skinny neck and it sounds like a very in your face '70s Jazz. Can also be used passive. Unbeatable for the money if you find one used

At point Yamaha BB came with JJ pickups


If you want a cheapo option Peavey Milestone II (Asian build) came with JJ. Can usually be found for a cool $100 and super comfortable, I gigged one for about 2 years. But body shape is definitely not a true P bass…


All in all I'd probably go G&L JB2. Solid instruments.

Yeah after looking at these they look nice, not quite the p bass shape, but very close. Any idea if anyone makes pickguards that could go on the JB2 like that?

I would just find the Precision P/J bass I wanted, route out underneath the pickguard for a J pickup, put new pickups in it, and order a custom pickguard from one of the MANY pickguard companies out there...I'm sure many of them already have a template for this very thing.

I bought a body and a neck from Warmoth, added some Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and TI flats. This baby really sings :



On a budget, a Peavy Milestone is very good IMO. I tried one in a pawnshop and it sounded sweet. The hardware was kind of cheap but it's easy to upgrade.

G&L makes good ones as well and in my area, they can be bought for little money. I don't really like that brand but the ones I tried sounded good as well.

The Fender Custom shop released the 2013 Precision Closet Classic with 2 DiMarzio pickups.
Precision body with maple neck and 51 headstock.
The look is not the same as Jazz pickups but sounds great with flats.

Interesting question. I'm not aware of any Fender produced P body bass with a Jazz neck and JJ pickups but since Fender has been making basses for decades you'd think there must be an oddball original Fender out there somewhere.

Here's an odd one-off Fender but it's sort of the opposite of what you described. What's unusual about this bass is that it's a Jazz body but with a P and J pickup. Most, PJs are made using a Precision body. This is a Reggie Hamilton artist series and while this one has upgrades including an aluminum neck it started life as a Jazz PJ with a 1.5" width Jazz neck.

And then there is the Fender Boxer Series basses which uses a P body with a J neck and JJ pickups. Another near-miss is the Fender Jazz Bass Special which uses a P body and P neck with a PJ configuration. I've yet to find a Precision with JJ pickups regardless of neck type. Maybe a Fender JJ Precision Bass model will be unveiled at the 2025 NAMM event. Yeah right!

G&L. BUT check the neck and truss rod. I have read where here on TB that a few G&Ls having truss rod issues and being and stripped. Check for your self.

You can sort of make a P pickup in a PJ with a Lusithand filter preamp to sound like a J. I had been testing that this past 2 weeks. But I think I can't really cheat the comb filtering that happens with the pickup position. Sorry not helpful.

Warmoth or MJT build body. or not as pretty, just route a another hole in a P-body?
