4001 Mashup

Looking through the Amazon reviews for this model, well, actually the newer model that replaced the one I have (3385 model is mine, the new one is the 3386), it seems the thickest hard wood they recommend is 1/2", well below the 2 3/4" maple neck blank and the 1 3/8" body wood I was trying to cut through. So it seems I have my answer. Amazon sells a package of 3 different blades for $20 - I may pick up a pack so I can cut a tighter radius. The current blade was having trouble doing the curves on the pick guard for the Ric.

A thinner blade might work for the body woods. I guess I'll see.

Ok, 2nd pickup done. Oddly enough, this one is also about 8000 winds, but is coming in a little lower at 11.77k. Perhaps the windings were a little tighter.

Next, I'll pot them, and figure out what kind of cover I'm using.

Oh, and I wound them reversed from each other. I'll use reversed poles as well, in hopes to have hum rejection.

Looking good!
I had forgotten about this thread and just sat here having breakfast and reread the whole thing.
I don't have a build going on right now, so I am vicariously enjoying this one. :D

When I am in the middle of a build, even when I am not actually working on it, I find it occupies my thoughts as I am always problem solving in my head. Then I find myself wishing I had more time to take care of other things, but when I don't have a build going I miss that thought process and can't wait to start the next one. :wacky:

I think I am hooked.:help:

I believe I am in the same boat. It's not like I need another bass. I just can't stop!

Addiction is a serious problem among builders :roflmao: don't worry it's my problem too. :bassist:

For some reason, one of the pickups is reading an open circuit. I'll have to try resoldering the leads to see if that fixes it. And while I thought I was going to buy a jointer, I saw a cabinet on Craig's list and couldn't pass it up.

Came with a cover, and a speakon cable for $300. The blue is a little weird, but it sounds great, and makes a nice match with my other SVT cab. I think I'll make a couple of 2x10 cabs out of it for smaller gigs, and they'll fit in my Civic.

Yes, it's a sickness. But I don't suffer from GAS, I enjoy every minute of it :D

Lots of sanding. Every time I think to myself how much easier this would be if I had lots of power tools, I remind myself how much great exercise I'm getting.

And here it is at 7:38 AM, and already it's getting too hot. Good thing summer is over, as that means only 2 more months of triple digit temps.

I have two questions.....since these aren't humbucking pickups, why are you potting them...and what are you using for pickup lead wire? It looks way too heavy for the purpose, which could cause either of the solder points at the pickup to break without some kind of strain relief.

Hmm, does one only pot humbucking pickups, and not single coils? And yeah, the lead wires are a little big - they're double shielded cables. I resoldered the connectors and it's working fine again. I usually put on strain relief once I put them in the covers.

I'm no expert with pickups. In fact, these are only the second set I've ever wound. But from what I've read, potting them will help prevent them from becoming microphonic. The easiest way I've read is using paraffin wax, which has a pretty low melting point, and doesn't really harden solid. If for some reason, I had to rewind them, heating them up would make the wax melt off, so they could be rewound if necessary. Frankly, if I had the means to pot them in epoxy, I'd do that. It's more durable.

And while it's true that I've never seen a Ric pickup potted, I think while we'll pretty much all agree that Ric instruments shine in the exterior design area, but the hardware department could certainly benefit from an update - at least the 4000 series models.
