Hey all. I've got an Ampeg SVT 410 cab that's around 16 years old (based on the serial number). At my last show, I plugged in and got a very horrible sound - all scratchy and distorted with no low end. I eliminated the cables and head as causes and ended up playing through one of the sound guy's 15" monitors. I wasn't too surprised the cab had issues. Recently, it took a nasty spill down a ramp, landing face down. Except that it played fine after that until now. Thinking the crossover was shot, I wired the speakers and tweeter directly up to an NL4 jack on a new plate (finally can use my GK700RB's biamp feature). No good - it still sounds like I'm playing with a distortion pedal, even at very low volumes. I pulled the drivers and did the battery test. There was a quick, light crackle when the battery made contact but no real movement of the cone to speak of. When trying the 'push the cone and listen for scratching' test, the cones barely moved on any of speakers. Melted coil on all 4 speakers? Is this plausible? If so, what could cause them all to fail together? I've got 4 new Eminence BP102's on the way, and I don't want to kill them too (and yes I'll not let the cab go on any solo adventures again!) -Ryan

Chances are that fall caused the magnets of all four drivers to eventually separate and you have frozen coils.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing - mechanical stress due to the fall...

Just 4 fun, try connecting only one speaker at a time to a known good and clean amp and test each driver individually. Seems somewhat unlikely that all 4 speakers failed at the same time...

Please tell me that you did check that the BP102's will actually work well in your cabinet?
My research was misleading. The BP102s sound terrible. At stage volume, they sound overdriven. It's kind of a nice overdrive sound, but not what I want all the time. I loved how the original speakers sounded, and I never could have imagined just how different these would sound.
Unfortunately, I've found 0 information on the originals - Celestion BG10H-150. The magnet has 8 ohm stamped on it. I've sent a request to Celestion for some specs. Without data, I have to go by others' experience with loading a sealed Ampeg 410 to find the right replacement.

In order to find suitable drivers you are going to have to model the cabinet against the specs of drivers to find one suitable. As you have just found out, loading any driver you fancy without doing the "science" first is a crapshoot.
