4x10 ports?

ok my tech had a cab i picked up for a really nice low price, appears to be a custom build cab, niceley done IMHO,something to build upon at least

OK here's my question;has 5 ports that were drilled in the baffle, they have been`plugged' with what is basically a backing board behind each hole, silicone smeared to seal each one and painted black

cab is built from chipboard but is WAY solid, has grab handles on sides and bedliner sprayed on the bullnose edged corners(the whole cab excuse me!,,i'm somewhat excited:hyper:),

tech picked up the cab years ago, installed some plastic cone (cheap) speaks, gigged it twice(playing bass),was burried in a pile of amps cabs combos,,,,he said one or two speaks wer `farting out' and i may want to replace them,i pulled one, says CHINA and the magnets looked pretty puny,,but hey! has grills/looks great!,i'm buying an 18 so this will be the highs or something to grab and do those bedroom `love jams' with:eek::D

anyway, give me the poop on ports(please):D sorry no pics i'm to lame to charge my camera batterys up

to rephrase=i'm thinking the cab is`pharting out' because the speaks are starving for replacement air=correct?

havent played thru the thing yet,got it late in the day and work took precedence,,i know i can make it stumble with my Kilobass head,i'm just looking for opinions,i'll prolly knock the plugs out of the`baffle' tomorrow anyway so she CAN breath

They're farting out because the cabinet was not designed based on the speaker specs. You just threw some speakers in because they fit. Don't waste another cent on speakers without understanding how cabinet design is done.

Opening those ports won't be worth the effort: a port must be carefully calculated to match the interior size of the cabinet and especially the detailed speaker T/S specs. Since you don't even know what speakers are in there, you certainly don't have the specs.

If you don't want to go through the learning process, dump the cab. It will be fine for guitar.

for 50 bucks with new/shiny speakers and grills,,:D,i'm going to keep it,no problem pharting her out and in fact 2 speakers do noticably phart a bit more,,i didn't understand what he was explainging about how he wired them up,he stated 4 ohms total, and he's an authorized Fender repair tech
EDIT(translation is possibly the way he wired it is the`why' of the pharting, two reverse two deverse or somthing like that)

he told me what it was going in to the deal,,but i must state that no buzzing from voice coils and the condition is spectacular

so,yes i have as of today played thru it and she's GREAT enough for Senior Center open mic nights:D,Bingo night at the VFW:D,wine tasting up at the commune on a moon lit night:eek:,,,

seriously tho' a micro head with 150-300 watts to go with it and she's cool to go,in fact i'm going to ask the tech(working on my combo) if he has any`other' heads in his pile(i know he does)

i could do a squeeze play for a 6x10 Ampeg cab via a car customer of mine but i want his money(he's gotten under my skin:spit:

anyway thanks for the love, customers are killing me here today( 2 phone calls while i typed this book;),i can power 2 8x10 cabs with this head so it's NICE to have that `headroom',i'm lovin it:bassist:
