Partial indeed... this is a music prof who didn't know what a quick change was until I told him. We all have our gaps...

A music student knows what he/she is doing when he/she and MOVE people with music. If you can't evoke emotion with music, you don't know what you're doing, even if you have a PHD in music theory.

If you know four chords and have an untrained voice, but can bring people to tears or make them unable to control their joy so they simply MUST dance.... well.... you know what you're doing.

I have seen/heard countless child prodigies move across fretboards on violins to guitars. I have heard that "golden child" favorite masters student blow intricate solos on a sax. I have heard the "best jazz scat singer ever" diddly bop for a half hour. None of them moved me.... at all.

I have also been there the night that a 17 year old Christian McBride playing unaccompanied on a double bass had people dancing in suits and evening gowns in the aisles of a college concert hall. He was just up there getn funky right by himself. He had the whole place eating out of his hands.

I stood and watched years ago when Huey Lewis (after the concert was "over") came back out and sat on a guitar amp and told the crowd he wanted to play a little more. It was just him and his harmonica. He brought the house down.

You "know what you're doing" when you command the room with your instrument... and not a minute before. You can do it as part of a group or solo. But without taking people on a journey they have no choice but to go on with you, you got nutn.

Tell THAT to your educated musician friend.
