A number of us here at TB and the Dudepit have been waiting anxiously for the 5 string Darkstar. I personally have a five string Jazz Bass that's waiting for the "Tractor" treatment.
I just got off of the phone with Fred and have an update as of today. As I understand it, he's still working on the prototype and is having a difficult time in getting his vendor to work on tooling up and producing the pickup's metal work. So, it's not his fault that it's taking so long. I've dealt with such companies and understand what Fred is going through - these companies cop an attitude like "you'll just have to wait until we feel like getting around to your work, and if you don't like waiting, go find some other firm to do the work". It's a bummer. Thanks for your continued efforts Fred! We'll be waiting.
