5 String Muting

Hi Anthony, I hope all is well with you. And thanks again for your left hand help. New dilema...Im trying to incorporate the floating thumb into my playing. It's coming along, but my slapping needs to be vacuumed. What are some exercises or techniques you would recommend to eliminate OSR and clean it up without the fretwraps? Thanks in advance Boss!

Hey CharlesRay,

I think that the key to cleaning up technique is to isolate the problem and slow things down.

There's no real way for me to access the problem without actually seeing you play. There could be some issues that you don't even realize are issues. So many bass players 'bounce' when they thump without realizing they are bouncing. Almost all of the Rock players I've heard who've 'learned' from watching Flea thump with a inefficient bounce. Most of them don't even realize it.

I'm not saying that's your issue but there's no real way for me to tell without seeing your playing.

Then there's thumping parallel or perpendicular to the string.

I can't tell any of these things without watching you play. And it would be unwise to speculate so I don't want to even do that.

If you're looking for someone to speculate then I'm not the right guy.

My suggestion is for you to study with someone you trust. It'll take a lot more than 'one' lesson to fix it so anyone who recommends a fix in a 'post' is selling you short.

My technique has developed over my career. And it'll continue to be tweaked the rest of my life.

Don't look for a shortcut unless that's what you think of your playing.

peace,
anthony
