One of these active 5-string PJ's happens to be at the top of my current GAS list.

Outstanding basses. But Yamaha BBs are a little like Musicman basses in that all the electronics are proprietary and there is a "Yamaha BB sound." To my ears it's very round in the high end and slightly modern. I love the way Yamahas sound and I'm glad they're becoming more popular again. I had a BB1600 in college - many gigs.

If you are on a budget and you want something that looks and sounds a bit more traditional, a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is hard to beat. They use proprietary elex too, but they are trying to cop a hot rod Fender tone. You can buy an alder-bodied model for $599 brand new. Honestly I'm not sure I'd recommend a PJ anywhere up to the ~$1500 point over one of these.

If you can stretch to the $2000-$2500 point, I'd recommend a Invalid Link Removed or a build-to-spec by Nino Valenti, which you could do with your choice of finish, hardware, and electronics starting with his T21-P model.

Above that, Sadowsky NYC at about the $5000 point. I'm not sure but don't think they do a Metro in a P shape.

I made my own with a Fender Jazz Bass and a router.

Cool!
I was thinking about having a jazz pickup added to this P5:

That VT5 looks awesome. I have also been in the preliminary phases of hunting down a high quality PJ5, and was initially leaning towards a Lull. That VT5 shows under 9 lbs also. Wow.

Agreed. They also make a VM5 variant, with a humbucker in place of the single coil. I _think_ it's possible to split that, so you essentially lose nothing and gain the thicker tone option that the humbucker would give if you run it wide open. I admit the pickup looks a little heavy where it's snugged between the P and the bridge - but boy do the soundclips of those sound great.

That's the other option I guess, find a nice P5 and add the J pickup. I know an excellent local luthier (plug for James Millman of Millman Guitars) who could do the routing and I have no problem with the wiring... so that's even more options to choose from :)
I was thinking of adding one of these and having it wired volume/blend/tone.
NJ5S Hum-Cancelling
I’m trying to be a “one bass guy” and having one bass that does everything.

Go for it! I think it’d be awesome. I dunno why Fender stopped making Deluxe Precision V’s with the PJ setup. There’s obviously a market for it.

There’s another cheap option, adding a proper P pickup to the Squier Precision 5 which for some bizarre reason they made with J pickups. A very easy mod I’d have thought.

Hey!
What are the controls on yours:
Volume/volume/tone?
Or are they stacked in some way?
It’s an audere preamp. Volume/Blend - Hi Mid/Lo Mid - Treble/Bass.

Might I add, I'm probably going to take it out. In a 4 string jazz I have, I did a push/pull volume and wired it for parallel/series and swapped the tone cap out for a .022. THAT THING SOUNDS MEAN. I kind of want to do that to this bass. I love the Audere, but miss having a tone knob. I have 2 other Deluxe jazzes with Audere's. But, because they're side mounted jack basses, I have a tone knob on the preamp as well. That's a win/win.
