5 string players what strings do you like?

I like Elixirs for my Ibanez SR755

Ernie Ball Power Slinkys Mediums (.050, .070, 085, .105, .135)

Actually, it's a good thing I like these and they work well for me because this is the only set of strings I can find with these gauges without ordering singles and being able to buy them over the counter at Guitar Center. They aren't the brightest strings out of the package, but they keep their out-of-the-package sound for a good long time. And using a Music Man Ray with a ceramic pup, trust me, they don't have to be any brighter...:o)

And I'm going to do everyone the courtesy of NOT declaring that MY gauge of strings are superior to a lighter gauge that someone else uses, as opposed to what I've seen earlier. Use what friggin' works for you. I like heavier strings. The end.

Funny thing about those strings. I used to use them a lot myself. Never had a problem with them at all. But I put a set on my Fender Roscoe Beck right after I got it and that bass HATED those strings. It was the strangest thing. I had never had anything like that happen to me before.

The elixirs are easy on your fingers due
To the coat that they have on them
Not to mention they sound good right of the
Box and last a Long time, been using them
For years.

Do the Elixers not fuzz up or does the coating stay on better than in the past? I remember seeing Elixers that looked like they were growing hair in the past.

only got one 5'er which is a 35" scale neck-thru with two EMGHZs wired passive. for strings i use a DR Hibeam 40-100 set with a 125 for the low-B. the 120 in the standard light gauge 5-string set was just a tad light for me and didnt quite balance with the rest of the strings tonally.

I'm glad you mentioned that because while I like those on my Music Man and my Fender Jazz, I DO NOT like them on my Alembic, which admittedly doesn't get a lot of use. I didn't mention this because this was about 5-strings and not 4. They don't have the "Alembic-ness" sound that stainless steel strings do.

What is it that you don't like about the Power Slinkys on the Roscoe Beck?

Thanx,

I reeealy like the sound of Fodera nickel rounds. Warm and rich, and they settled down fast. Gonna feel rough at first but damn they sound good (to me). I'm playing a 45-130 set on a 35" scale and I get all hot and bothered just thinking about it. Gonna go play now.

I like the modern bright sound, so my wood-bodied 5-strings have D'Addario nickel rounds. I recently bought a used Cort Curbow that came with a new set DR Hi Beams, which I thought sounded great on the Luthite body (nickels sound dull to me on those things). I now have all of my Luthite basses (a second Curbow and 2 Ibanez EDA905s) strung with stainless rounds.
