5 String project (O.P.A.A.T.)

I’ve decided to build a five string dream bass to use in blues, rock n roll, country (old), soul/RnB, and everything else where flatwound strings and passive basses are king.

Here is the rough specs so far.

Kiesel B50 body in Alder

Kiesel bolt-on maple neck with maple fingerboard - 34” scale length, 14” radius, bone nut, vintage sized frets

Hipshot lollipop tuners and vintage style bridge

Nordstrand Big Blade J’s

Stellartone Tele-Jazz controls

Labella DTF “1954” gauge

*Bass will be named O.P.A.A.T - One Piece At A Time

I bought a J5 with a usacg flame neck, roasted mahogany body, fralin +10% Js, same tele bass plate, all hipshot hardware.
Problem is the original owner took a bath on it when he sold it to me.

Maybe go slowly with the build by modding a known good basic Squier or mim fender.
Get the electronics voiced how you want, and live with each piece you install at a time until you get a replacement neck and body.

This is a build I’ve been planning for a long time and know what I’m after in the end.

No, I did it to someone.
Things like that don't happen to me.
I built, repaired, and modified instruments in the late 80's -mid 90's.

Go slow with your dreams, and I advise you to make each item you collect instantly useable in a playable test mule while you are making your dream a reality.

I will say this, the Keisel neck has a wider profile. If you are used to a Fender fiver it will feel different.

It shouldn’t be a problem as my last 5er was a BeeBass with a wide profile.

Kiesel string spacing is 19mm from what I understand.

Nice, but be extremely carefull with connecting the body with the neck. It can actually be done by luthier, the other things are eathier to do.

Curious... Any reason you chose adler? My favorite bass has an ash body. I don't know if the bass sounds so good because of the body make-up or not. There are so many opinions on how much it contributes.

I tend to like alder bodies and it’s easier to paint.

Since this build concept is taken from the Johnny Cash song “One Piece At A Time”.. I plan on using some my favorite parts from various Fender guitars and basses.

For example:

the control plate will be from a telecaster.

The body is of a Pbass shape with Jazz pickups with a Jazz pickup cover.

Now for tuners. I love the Fender tall reverse turners.. but only four string.

I was thinking of using them with a hipshot UL clover tuner for a 4+1 headstock layout

What do you guys think?
