So after the resounding success of my electric upright buld, I have the itch to build another bass. Keep in mind that this is in the early planning stages, so details may (will) change.
I learned how to play bass on a Music Man (HH Stingray) and it has kind of set the tone standard for me as a bass. I also love the look of the Rickenbacker with the bindings, and square inlays. I also play as my only EB a Spector NS-2005 (a Korean one, but plays like a gem).
As usual, budget is a concern (which is part of why I built my first guitars) and I'm debating how much to spend on pickups. The rest of the parts will likely be a bit of a parts bin mashup...
Basic design thoughts, custom Rickenbacker inspired shape (emulating a 4003). I'd like to find some nice lacewood or something like it for the top which will be flat with an arm bevel. Back will be mahogany, but I'd like to make it sculpted like my Spector. Bindings will probably be white/black/white. I'm initially thinking that a transparent red finish will be the plan.
Maple fretboard with black or contrasting wood inlays, my signature headstock with either 3x2(most likely) or 4x1 cloverleaf tuners.
The neck will be a hidden neck-through I just love the sustain that a through neck provides, and it's just easier for me to build. The neck will be completely hidden from the front by the top wood. I'm thinking that a walnut/maple multi-laminate neck would be stunning in this application. (And I'd use walnut as the contrasting wood for the inlays).
For electronics, I'm leaning towards putting some budget pickups in it at first, but I might just save the money and go straight for a pair of Seymour Duncan 70s. I'm also checking out the Fishman Fluence pickups, and looking at the EMG David Ellefson set. I'm definitely open to suggestions on this front.

Only... I think the fists* are a little too small in relation to the body size. The EBMM implies bigger fists to me.
