5 string t-40

hi all,

i´ve been thinking about getting a fiver lately and since im a big fan of narrow string spacing i was thinking about fitting 5 strings in a t-40... i figured out that the blade pickups would work great there...

im still trying to figure out if making an extra hole in the headstock or getting a whole new neck, with p-bass nut width...

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT It?

DID ANYONE DID THIS BEFORE?

THOUGHTS? TIPS?

actually, it seems like it HASNT been done, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN...

but what i was talking about was convertin a t-40 in a "t-50" :D

i coudnt use the strings-trough- body option and i would have to put a schecler (i never spelled it right...) 5 strings 3d bridge... my biggest concern is the neck, because i dont know if there will be room for an extra tuner, and replacing the brass nut...

any ideas?

It did eventually get finished. Just not for a while and it ended up going to someone else. Scottpro is a member here he might be able to give you some more info.

I think you're better off getting a cheap 5 string bass.

Agreed. This doesn't seem like a project that would have much going for it. The pickups would work fine, but as you say, you'd need to forgo the through-body stringing and use something like the Schaller bridge with the sideways rollers. There might be room for a tuner on the opposite side of the headstock, but the string would be at an angle from the nut, and the spacing would be very tight indeed. Another option would be to plug all the holes and re-drill for five mini-tuners, but the nut would be just as cramped.

Getting a new neck is more realistic, but it would need careful fitting, esp. if you wanted to transplant the tilt mechanism. Either way, you could get a decent five-string for less than you'd have to sink into this scheme. Do you own a T-40 now, or are you just toying with the idea so far?
