5 string to use with high C instead of low B

Actually no, Deynn, it was not a personal attack. It's a perfectly legitimate statement, and it's based out of conversations I've had with him outside of TB.

I mentioned you don't really NEED the high C unless you either 1) take lots of solos, or 2) play lots of full voiced chords. Now, he doesn't do either, and I know the extent of chord knowledge based on conversations I've had with him outside of TB. I'm not flaming him or making personal attacks on him, just making an honest comment which expresses my opinion on why he probably wouldn't need the high C. Take it how you'd like.

After all, didn't you say that if you had an opinion on whether someone should or should not do/get this or that that you should explain it? I did.

Seems to be the common opinion of many here that I have something against C-Eye. I don't, not in the least bit. However, if I disagree with something, I'm going to say something about it. Just so happens that I disagree with quite a few things he says. In this case, I'm just trying to save him some money. He can buy it if he'd like.

If for some reason you would like to continue this conversation, feel free to PM me. I'm open to discussion.

If you didn't want it side-tracked, you should've PMed ME in the first place, before complaining to the moderators.

Luis, I seem to remember that too. Hhhmmm. Oh, and you should'nt listen to other people's opinions, and should decide for yourself! ;) :D

As far as the G-Bass goes, they're pretty good, but I'd prefer a dual pickup model, like the B-Quad. Much better bass, though granted it's more expensive. But it's worth it. But hey, if you like one pickup, it's a great bass.

What kind of bass is this? Sounds like you may not have enough of the string wound on the post for the last two strings which will affect the angle that the string breaks over the nut.

I believe the G-bass 5 is a dual pickup bass. I played one quite some time ago. I liked the tone of it, but I personally didn't like the neck that well. It is nowhere near the fast neck of the Cirrus or the Millenium/Millenium Plus.

C-Eye, why not check out the Millenium series of basses?? They are pretty close price wise to the G Bass, and offer a lot more tonal capabilities than the G Bass does.(three band EQ with mid shift, MM and J pups) In my opinion, they are a far superior bass to the G. I had a 4 stringer for awhile, but it wasn't exactly what I was after, so I traded it for my Warwick. But if I was you, I would check em out, they definitely are kick ass basses.

I've tried out some G basses. 4 and 5 string. I liked the millenium basses better. Tonally and Ergonomically. But the neck on the G's are impressive, just didn't feel balanced though...sigh.

I had a washburn XB500 that I strung E-C. Very comfortable. Had some buzzing w/ the E and the C. I just put a couple wraps of Aluminum foil under the strings...tuned em up, and cut away the excess foil. Bingo...prob solved...$0.10 fix for a experiment. Didn't kill tone or sustain...but it ain't like that POS really had either to begin with:) I sold the sucker cause it was a real turd. Felt like playing a bass that had came back from the dead...soulless. But it was fun to set up two different chords on the same instrument. But was totally useless for rock/funk.

And that's my $0.02

Crawling Eye, your posts are fine, dont even respond to remarks that are less thoughtful. You have a good idea with the high C. If you dont "need" it now, as has been suggested, then you may need it later after having used it for a while and eventually figuring out when it is "needed."

Ability level NOW doesnt have anything to do with ability level LATER. Practice makes perfect and the tools you use (a high C) to practice with are your own choice.

Your striving to do something different shows a strong attitude that you will succeed. Those who try to hold you back will most likely be the ones who fail themselves.

Phil, originally his bass was strung BEADG instead of EADGC, so the nut slots are definitely too wide, regardless of the break angle.

Having made this conversion on a couple of different basses, my experience has been that the nut slots usually aren't too wide, though the slots on his bass may be. Anyway he hasn't had the setup on the bass checked, so who knows what the cause of the fret buzz is.

Nut slots have to be cut to the correct width, or the string will flop around and buzz in there, not to mention it won't sit right, and because of this, it will be harder to get the action and intonation correct.

I strung my old 4 string ADGC once, and they strings buzzed like crazy. I eventually had to get a new nut anyway, because the original broke when I used some heavy gauged Roto flats.

It is an F Bass.

It has an appointment this Wednesday with the good bass tech. He's located right next door to Berkeley in Boston. He does a lot of work on the local's instruments so I'm assuming he knows what he's doing. This is in addition to a few recommendations I've received about him.

I'll post back what the outcome is.

Which brewer9 doesn't know because he isn't a Jazz Snob and doesn't want to be a Theory Nazi, because knowing what he's talking about would ruining his ability to create music and would take all the fun away. Right? :D
