5 strings choice.

Hello evryone,

Its been a while since I read posts on this forum. Very helpful.

Today that's my turn to ask something. I'm a 4 strings bass player and since a couple of weeks I really want to go further with a 5 strings.

I'm actually hesitating in two basses :

- The Gibson EB 2017 around 800 euros.

- Sterling by music man SUB Ray 5 around 500 euros.

I don't know if I should buy this apparently good more expensive bass or be reasonable and stay on this Ray5.

My only fear with the ray5 is to be disappointed by the sound. Specially for the B string.

For the information I'm actually playing on a Cort C4 plus.

Is the Gibson or Ray5 good for metal hard rock ?

I tried a sub 5 recently and was really impressed with the sound. The neck felt a little chunky for me personally but a nice bass.

How did you arrive at this short list?

For anyone's first bass I'd recommend looking in the classifieds. Get a good used one. You'll be on a steep learning curve starting from zero and who knows what you'll want to play in 6 or 12 months time. Starting with a used bass makes better use of your cash when you come to upgrade.

My recommendation would be to check out Lakland Skyline 55-01 and 55-02 basses. Fantastic basses for the money.

There are lots of other quality new basses available for great prices these days, but there are always better values to be found used (obviously). Of those two, I'd choose the SUB base on what I've read, haven't played either.

I've owned an earlier version the EB. I'd vote for the SUB. There are lots of good options out there in that price range, depending on what's available in your area: Yamaha, Squier and others...
