51 P Bass with ashtrays??

Ive been through the Squier and Fender love threads and didnt see any but I know there have got to be a few photos of 51 P Basses with ashtrays, and more importantly, pickup covers installed. Im really digging the 51 P Bass but dont like the fact that I have to float my thumb while playing the E string. So, Im looking to maybe pickup a 51 and install a pickup cover for my thumb.

Not mine, but I googled it to give you the idea. I've seen them around here though. I'm sure you can find the ashtrays at AllParts or somewhere.

You see them with the bridge cover flipped over from time to time as well... it keeps the foam strip glued in there off of the strings.

You can easily buy the covers from places like Bass Parts Resource, or Angela Instruments, or you should be able to find them on ebay all day long.

Absolute must in my book. 51's look just so awefully cool with the covers that the reissued 51's should have them installed already from the factory.

I'm sitting here playing it to 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' and it cuts and sounds like the bass on that recording.

The Roto77s make it though! Otherwise it's too high-sounding.

Does anyone know...would a 51 P Bass pickup cover fit over top of a split coil pickup, or can you only go with the traditional single coil?

I think the older P-styles won't actually span the splits - but when I get home I'll measure them for you to be sure.

I took them outta the package and put them on - so there's no changes to them at all.

The older P-cover is about 3" wide, net. The Split P'ups are approximately 4" wide, net.

I see a slight ---- technical ---- difference.
