55-02: Rosewood or Maple?

I'm getting really close to getting a Lakland 55-02 standard with natural finish. I can't decide between a rosewood or a maple fingerboard and no shops around here carry Laklands. Any 55-02 owners wanna chime in and help me out with some descriptions and such?

Check out my avatar and my profile picture. They're pictures of my old natural/rosewood 55-02, which was a PHENOMENAL bass. I sold it back in April and I still can't bring myself to change the pictures. In natural I prefer the rosewood fingerboard but since i bought that one I discovered that a sunburst, especially the deluxe, and a maple fingerboard is one of the most beautiful combinations for a bass.

Here's the only better picture I have handy right now. Maybe when I get home tonight I can find some others.

I personally love the look of ash+maple. I have had 3 basses (all different -- JB copy, Tribute L2000, fretless P) with that configuration and in fact, I ordered an L2500 that turned out to be ash/rosewood, and I returned it.

It's not like I'm a fanatic or anything.

If ever I can justify yet another bass it'll likely be a 55-02 with that combo (unless I find a MM SR5 fretless first).

+1 for maple. I am in agreement with T.B. above. I have the 55-02 with the Barts. You can tone down the maple by moving to the neck pickup and rolling on the bass. The Barts are warm already. I play primarily finger style and really like them. You may want to A/B them to the newer Lakland pickups as well. Whichever way you go, you can't go wrong. It is a fantastic instrument.

Peace,

Keith
