I've been doing a lot of research into trying to find a powerful, versatile, but most importantly CHEAP rig from respectable well-known manufacturers. I've decided I want a head with at least 450 watts at 4 ohms, and a 2x12 4 ohm cab that can handle that much power. I'm going for a heavy-hitting, lightweight rig for small to medium sized gigs. Versatility is important because I play all sorts of styles, however PRICE IS THE MAIN FACTOR! This is what I've found, including links:

Can anyone think of any better reasonably priced alternatives, or any reason why I shouldn't purchase either of these??

nothing wrong with a head putting out more than the cab can handle, ask all those powering cabs with Crest ca9's, having a head with a higher output is a good thing, underpowering a cab is detrimental to the speakers lifespan

Yes and no. You can very easily have a 2000 watt amp power a 600 watt cab if you set the master right. Also, there's an amount of power a speaker can tolerate before entering into compression mode: it won't get any louder but the noise/signal ratio will worsen. So a lot of high RMS wattage boxes can only take a fraction of what they advertise for great sound reproduction.

The underpowering speaker myth is just that, a myth. Bill Fitzmaurice refuted that argument about 300 times here and on his board. Speakers blow when they go over their excursion limit or when the voice coil melt, not because you send a distorted signal true them.

If that was true, everyone who plugged a high gain unit into a speaker would reduce it to shreds. The square wave/not cooling thing is also no true.

Thanks everyone for your input! I wanted to make sure I had more watts than the cab was technically capable of handling just to make sure I could push it as much as it could take (which I definitely plan on doing! :bassist:) Having no experience with either of these pieces (although I have played through some Ashdown rigs and loved them) makes me a little hesitant, but I have a lot of confidence in the cab from all the reviews I've read! The head I'm not so sure about, it just seems too good and powerful for the price not to have something wrong with it - so does anyone else have any experience with the MAG 600H?? I'm very curious about it's reliability and power output!
