I have about $600 to spend on a new bass. Any suggestions? Used or new? Funky and R&B would be my favorite style to play.

$600 budget - What would you get?

I'd reccomend a P/J style bass, or if not that, a Jazz bass. P bass is good for that Motown thump, but if you're gonna be doing some funky slapping, you'll want at least one Jazz pickup in there.
Try Peavey, Ibanez, or I've seen some good used Fenders in that price range.

Last year I went on a major bass hunt with the same budget.
I ended up getting a new Fender Deluxe Jazz and a BadAss II bridge for it. It really opened up the doors to alot of things I couldn't do with my previous bass enough to the point were I've upgraded again to a Warwick.
Quality Used gear always holds endless possibilities too.

or substitute J for P, or a SUB (there's one in the austin craigslist for 300)
I would stretch a little and pick up a 50's classic P bass, but that's mainly what i'm GAS'ing for right now.
Wow, thanks for all of the great feedback! I was leaning towards a Jazz or Used SUB or a G&L so this really validates it. I wanted to know if there were any "sleepers" out there that I hadn't researched.

Whatever you do, go used. I'm pretty much always on a similar budget as you are, and used gear effectively doubles your "new" budget.
Check out a Cort GB-75 if you can. I think it is a whole lot of bass for the money. IMO, it comes awfully close to a Skyline 55-02.
I've read the Skylines are made under contract in the Korean Cort factory. So that makes sense.
