Suggesting over twice the OP's price range does not sound like good advice to me. Some people simply are on tight budgets or do not want to spend +$1,000 on a bass. I think we need to give suggestions reasonably close an OP's price range.

I've had both the Tribute L2000 and Fender Classic '50s P, and while the L2000 is versatile, the P has the personality. I traded off the L2000 and the P became my gigging bass.

Can't say anything about Dr. Cheese but I picked up a Lakland 55-01 in like new condition yesterday for $475 here on the forums.
