I currently have a Dean 5 string fretless with active pickups. It is OK, but does not have the tone and certainly can't bring the funk.

Yamaha makes a great bass.
I also played a Washburn the other day. Don't know tha model, but for $199 it did P-Bass as good as any and the neck was really nice. It was also VERY light.

keep your eyes peeled - used Fender USA basses can pop up in that price range. For 629 shipped you can get a 50s Classic P... or buy 5 or 6 SXs!!

There would be no resale on this bass.

Buy USA and depreciation value doesn't plummet.

I'd go for the Lakland personally. I wouldn't bother with a MIM Fender.
