610 recommendstions

Greetings. I am a guitar player that is starting to dive into the bass world. I've been playing bass for over 10 years, but really started focusing on it within the last year or so. I currently have a bassman 800 head through an ampeg svt 410 and 115. I want to get a 610 but am having a hard time choosing which one to get, obviously the fender 610 neo is the way to go with the bassman head. But are there any other 610s out there that sound similar to the 610 neo? Unfortunately there aren't any 610s at any local guitar store near me that I can plug into and try. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Tonewise, I'm looking for a punk rock type tone, not too heavy on the lows, but enough where the top end pushes out, but is still supported by a strong low and mid. Also cost isn't an issue, I'm open to suggestions both on the budget end and on the high end.

I'd like to know why you think a 6x10 is what you want/need.

Personally, I would either just get a second 4x10 cab to match the one you have (to create a modular 8x10), or a second 1x15 cab to match the one you have -- the former if you need more volume and the latter if that would be adequate.

I'll just add that IMO if the latter wouldn't be adequate your band is too loud.

Because tilting back, and rolling in one cabinet is easier, faster, and more than enough.

I owned a Berg NV610, and what you want pretty much describes what it does. I miss it, but now I own a pair of Berg NV115’s.

I have a Barefaced two10 that rocks. Their six10 would be a killer too I’d imagine.

I have to agree...the SWR Goliath SR is a mighty fine cab and was exactly what I was looking for when @mb94952 suggested it to me! I don't mind the weight since it has kickback casters and I just tip & push it everywhere. All my bigger cabs like my LDS 215 have that...I dont like to carry

I was going to say that too. I still use a Mesa PH610 and it is very powerful. Not too hard to move either with the tilt back castors.

Indeed. I have the rear ported version with 4 casters. I actually prefer this as it allows me to keep my head on top of the cab as I roll it. I’ve had it about 20 years and it’s still kickin’.

I would second the Fender neo for that head, but if you want a rig that is cheap though and sounds good, acoustic! Not as powerful as your Bassman, but sounds great for a 600 w combo 2x10 plus my 4x10. Just a thought.

I think you're right to consider the Fender 610. Super tone, very lightweight.
I have owned and played the Ampeg 610, great cab but a bit heavy, and it's tone might not be for everyone.
I own the Fender neo 810. Fantastic cab, and extremely convinient. One of the lightest 810 on the market.

I would buy a Barefaced Six10 if I where you, or a Four10 and a Two10 to make a modular rig. Killer!

This, especially the modular 410+210 option.

Ampeg is the classic choice for this situation. It’s almost always what you see these kinds of bands touring with, the tone you’re describing is going to be right there.

That being said it’s H E A V Y and moving it around does get old.

The fender is also an obvious choice given you have the head to go with the cab also it’s lighter weight, but these cabs sound very different.

I was very close to buying an Ampeg 6x10 but went with a Mesa Subway 2x15 instead and haven’t thought about owning or using anything else since.

I have an SWR 610. I refuse to take it anywhere. It's a huge pain to load in and out. An 810 is actually easier. That said, I've switched to a pair of light 210s for gigging.

I'm not a yuge fan of giant cabinets, mainly when I have to move them. over my 57 years, tho I've never owned one, I've played through numerous SVT setups and loved them. even at low volumes they are just SO frikking smooth. if I have a roadie or it's backline that's a one thing, otherwise it's a whole 'nother ball of wax. that said... David Luke at RevSound builds a 610 that's a whole lot lighter and sounds amazing. I've used it a few times and it sounds great. from the "ouch my back" standpoint it's better, but still more than I'm willing to deal with. and only you can answer the eternal "will it fit in my Prius" question cause it's still a biggie. [wry grin] I would look at what RevSound has to offer, if for no other reason than you would be buying something new.

The Fender Neo 610 is perfect for what you are wanting to do. They can definitely be hard to find to try in person (just like most of the cabs people are suggesting here?).

I used an Ampeg 610 for years and loved the sound of it. I sold it about a decade ago when I was no longer playing out and couldn't justify it. A few years ago I got back into playing out and when it was time to buy a cab I compared the Ampeg 610 and the Fender 610 and the Fender won out. Both in tone and weight.

Playing punk and having Mike Dirnt stuff, he uses one too if that makes a difference to you.

Most of the cabs mentioned here you can't go wrong with, but still think the Fender is right
