'62 RI project - opinions?

Hey all,

I just found a MIJ '62RI neck on an budget bass body with Samick (I know, right?!) pickups in a guitar store. I'm taking steps to buy the bass, it's $300, and start up a '62 RI project bass. I'm curious about what I should do about the body/pickguard/pickups?

I contacted Nash guitars today to get a quote on a body, and am awaiting a reply. As far as pickups go, should I get the Fender '62 pickups (that go for about $60 on ebay), Fralins, Duncan Antiquities?? Sorta lost on pickups, the only replacement set I've ever bought were GFS's.

If Nash's price is ok, what color/pickguard combo would be most authentic for a '62? (OR, does anyone here have a body they'd like to pm me about?)

Basically, I'm just wanting to save a BEAUTIFUL neck from a life of pain and pawn shops. I'm open to any advice from you, most honorable TB'ers.

I mean, I do like the satin finish on the highway 1's... I just want it to be a faithful reproduction. Would having a hwy 1 body cheapen that?

theyre both alder , of course the alder from an AVRI body is probably drier , but they are both laquer finishes , and it already has a japanese neck with the wrong tuners ,NO?

as far as pickups go I put this together from parts , and it has antiquity 2's in it , I like the sound of my '62 AVRI better but its subjective id by whichever of those pickups cost the least and use a .01CAP

As far as colors, I believe burst, black, and white are accurate, but I'm no expert. For some reason I want to say that a tort guard with the burst and white, and mint on black. Also needs to be the 11 hole pg with the screw in the middle. I love the fender custom shop pickups and Ant II's. Either stack pots or VVT would be accurate for '62. I'd go with stack knobs. Also need the copper grounding plates with the grounding strip from the bridge. The ones you can find today are wider than what was used in '62. I usually cut them in half to get a reasonable copy of them. I'd say that a highway one body would be a great place to start.

I did a mash up of my favorite jazz features. '62 style body with a '66 style neck.

Yeah, I don't know about nash's body price, but if it's too high, a highway 1 body sounds like a plan. And DTF, you're right, haha, it does have the backwards tuners, so "accuracy" in that sense is shot, anyway.

What about bridges? Every bass I own has a badass II... but again, that'll look out of place on a 62.

And as for the stacked pot comment, I'm working with a Precision, not a Jazz, I don't think that works.

threaded saddle, theyre under 20 bucks on ebay and are my favorite bridges

Lollar pickups and a luxe capacitor have been purchased and are being installed. Turns out the body isn't pawn-y, it's legit, and a black pickguard is going to round it out. I'll post a picture once the overhauling is complete.

Thanks again, I love these boards such cool people.
