i once tried a set of ti's based on all the internet raves. tried a good 3 months to get along with them. seems as though everyone either loves them or hates them, not much middle ground. i liked the extra mids you get out of them, but they would never go dead. never got used to that loosey goosey tension or the feeling like they were rolling under my fingers, either. sent them to my pal jeff in canada who loves them.

i don't like chromes right out of the box, but they do go dead very nicely and quickly, which is what i want in a flat, otherwise i'd just as soon play rounds. i could never be as manly as justin with the gauges, though. 40-95 for me, thank you.

i think it's the silk lining between the windings that causes the rolling feeling. i also think it's what keeps the ti's insulated from dirt and grime so that's why they never go dead.

used to have a set of rotosound flats on my beatle bass copy that gave me that rolling feeling as well.

My B-15R is a little more full range, and has master volume so you can vary the grit more. B-15N is just straight up more the vintage money, tho.

Never tried those strings you guys are talking about. I think I'm pretty happy with my ol' Chromes. and those new D'Addario tapewound strings. Fun.

I really love your tone in that YouTube video (and most times I hear your playing) got me to try a set of medium Chromes. They sound excellent but man, do I feel like I took my fine motor muscles to the gym for a few hours after rehearsal.

I had two questions:

Do you find the Chromes loosen up at all tension wise after wearing in?

Do you do your own setups on your instruments?

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge, experiences and answer our questions.

if you got your pino palladino precision new, you might have inadvertently tried ti's since it comes with them. but enough about them...what's the deal with the d'addario tapewounds? i've only tried the old fender tapewounds, and was shocked to find they sound like rounds with a plastic coating over them. how about the d'addarios? are they more dead sounding? will you be doing a demo with them like you did the other strings?

erik, i can answer the question about chromes loosening up...no they don't. if they did, i probably wouldn't like them as much ;)

Thanks Jimmy, I had a feeling that was going to be the answer. Probably part if why they sound so good too. Honestly I feel like getting comfortable with the response on these would take a little while and require me to play with a much heavier touch than I am used to.

Thanks Erik! My strings definitely become less tense over time. Not by a large margin, but I do notice it.

Jimmy, tapewounds just have an even shorter sustain than new Chromes, and just a unique tone...can't really explain. They're really cool.

interesting...might have to try a set. i like the idea of tapewounds, just didn't care for fender's execution so much.

also, apologies to all if i gave inaccurate info about the chromes. i didn't really notice it with the wuss gauges i use, but i just put a new set on my p lyte so i'll watch for it a little closer and try to take more notice.

I have a 5-yr old set of Chromes on my Jerry Jones that in a way are still not dead enough (and I play that bass a lot). They are versatile though as a result. The 2 year old Labella flats on my Glaub sound already. . . "classic";) But in both cases those strings are part of their respective basses now so I guess I'm stuck!
I dig the Roto tapes on my Franken P---very Herbie Flowers.

Never had the "rolling" phenom with any strings---I imagine that's what an Ashbury would feel like!

whoa, you have a jerry jones? nice! i just got a new dano longhorn that's pretty sweet. been told i should put chromes on it but i have xl's that i'm going to leave on it. but i like the way chromes go dead. the labellas and old style fenders are more "classic," but as fate would have it, it turns out i like a little bit of sustain.

i've only played an ashbory once a long time ago, but i do remember it rolling like those ti's, btw.

Chromes will ALWAYS be good on almost any bass I think. I like extremes--heavy gauge dead old fats and bright new rounds. But if I was stuck with one string for life I would go right down the middle and pick Chromes.

TaySte...yes that Hofner is the one. Unfortunately, others in that London Hofner collection purchase are not so strong.

faulknersj, Lyle Workman bought that one from dealer buddy of his that bought it off the estate of a gentleman blues musician from the South, apparently. Lyle bought that and a '66 Jazz. He didn't think he was "a P-Bass" guy and thought he over-purchased on an impulse. So he immediately offered it to me after a few days. For a song. He has big regrets about ever letting it go. I have a very personal relationship now and it sleeps in my bed with me whenever my girlfriend isn't over. And sometimes it even sleeps in the middle. Alexandra just has to deal with it, you know.

I see a Hofner Club in that rack picture. Ever tried one with the "cavern bass" pickup spacing (bridge pickup in more a P-bass location)? I'm thinking about picking one up. I've never played one personally, but this guy seems to get a great tone with one.
