How much freedom are you allowed???

Not much!! They really want nobody to step over the other instruments. And are very traditional minded. They like simplistic basslines.
I think for this song the less is better.

In the intro to play the same as the guitar, but playing a tie note instead sometimes, to add variation.

I was thinking to play something like this in the verses

Beat 1:Bb (Quarter note) 2:C (Quarter note) 3: C (8th) - C (8th) 4: Bb (8th)- C (8th)
Measure 2
The same Roots as the guitar

What I might do: For the intro keep it tight, don't give much away. Probably unison the riff playing only root notes.
For the verse unsion the first bar of the riff, on the second bar use a rhythm which contrasts the rhythm of the guitar. You don't have to fill in every hole he leaves, but make it obviously different, and strong (catchy) enough that it doesn't sound accidental. For note choice, use Fmajor pentatonic and you can't go wrong.
