70's Ampeg V4 head and V4 4x12 cab $800?

So a guy is offering to sell his setup, the Ampeg V4 head and the 4x12 V4 cab for $800. Good deal? I looked around for threads on this head but couldnt find what I was looking for. Does anybody have experience with this setup? Should I grab it up or is this a standard price for this setup?

I have the same rig, except mine is a V4B (I forget the difference but I recall that it's minimal). I put in 2 12" bass speakers and sealed off the 2 remaining holes... instant sealed cab 2X12 (I actually did the box design and the internal volume's about perfect). Just think, you could probably offset the cost by selling 4 "vintage 12" guitar speakers". ;) Tom

The V4 IS a superb bass amp. From my reading in the Ampeg book, the V4 was so popular with bass players that they just ripped out the reverb and created the V4B. I do believe there would be more of a difference between these 70's heads and a V4bh of the present. I think the tubes and circuits are completely different IIRC. I think the 70's V4 is the best value in tube bass amps out there.

You know i was thinking the same thing. It looks alittle small to be a 412 cab. The seller did mention that he would be willing to sell just the head unit for around $500. I definately do not need a guitar cab. Thanks for pointing that out.

Okay the guy just dropped the price down to $700 for both. Plus I found this head (Ampeg VT-22) for $400. What do you think I should get out of the two?

Whoops-My bad... I was meaning the V4 & V4B were same. I realize that the modern version-V4BH must be different- its 25lbs lighter for a start:D:rollno: Sorry. Buy the VT-22 if its IS the V4!!!!!!!! If what ppl say in that the V4 is even better than the V4BH-you'll get a superb amp!

That head is 27 inches wide. The 4x12 is 27x30. That looks like the correct 4x12 to me.

Now, the 4x12 sounds fine with bass, but my 70's V4 through the Berg 322 sounds INSANE! A very punk rock tone, IMO.

The only differnece between the V4 and V4B is that the V4B does not have reverb.

actually, quite on the contrary

i have a '72 SVT and i just picked up a V4 and put it on my 2 SVT Classic 15's. i'd definitely go for the head, and possibly look for something else like a 410HLF, or 810, or 2x15 for that V4 unless you like the sound. the guitar 412 is pretty warm for what it is, but not my cup of tea.

some SVT's(like mine) are 150 watts on a single 810 and 300 watts when you connect two

the V4 is rated conservatively at 100 watts, though more like 120 so it's about as loud as an SVT on a single 810 cab

side by side, it has VERY similar warmth and punch to my SVT rig and its about impossible to tell which one's plugged in using the same cab. so if looking for something smaller, id suggest a V4 or V4B(identical but with an added bass frequency switch, and removed the reverb)

correction, they also added a bass frequency cut on the V4B akin to the SVT controls, whereas the V4 only had treble and mid switches

like psycho said, the vt22 IS a v4 chassis with a different faceplate. for bass i would NOT do this, as the 12's are going to be weak(guitar speakers) and it's an open back cabinet(lose all low end) that you'd have to modify and seal. if you want a project, i thought about doing that to my V4 but im probably just gonna get a 2x15 cabinet built for the head.

Wait a minute! If that 4X12 cab is the same mid-70's guitar cab that I have, it's not open-backed... like I said, it's sealed. I'm not sure it would sound very good w/mid-70's guitar speakers in it, but if you seal two holes in the baffle and mount 2 bass speakers in the others, you get a great-sounding (if heavy) sealed 2X12 bass cab. BTW, this thread is ancient and I'm sure OP solved his problem long ago :).

I've never heard of this on any tube powered SVT's. My 72 SVT and SVT-II produce the full 300 watts of power through the normal speaker jack, and is only halved when a second 4 ohm cab is simultaneously connected to the EXT. speaker jack. Does your 72 SVT have some sort of mod here?
