70s Fender, what should I look for?

What a deal! We should all guess what it could be until we find out for sure. :)

Here's my guess:

1968 Sunburst P with a maple fingerboard.

Early Peavey solidstate head and cab.

Merle Haggard is at the top of the country music icons. His face, Johnny Cash, Willie, and Waylon Jennings would be on the Mt Rushmore of country music. Hank Jr from the 70's/early 80's is right up there too!

Here's the pic of Ward I referenced previously. It's the mid 60's according to the website I got it from. Thats Merle Haggard in the foreground....Jerry Ward with the bass... obviously

Oh man a burst would be so awesome!!!! And yea, its a deal that my BF, who is not happy with the basses I have right now, is not standing between me and this one (but I did promise if this bass is indeed a true vintage Fender and its original and good, I agreed to sell my Squier VMJ :( for it or after I got it (probably sell it to go toward getting it for that matter) but considering what I'd be getting in return, thats fine :cool:).

I know nothing of vintage amps but if it ends up a Peavey thats more then fine with my Peavey loving self here :cool:

What Im hoping for is an all original black/rosewood (or burst/rosewood (but will take burst or black and maple too ^_^) with one of the thinner from front to back necks and oddly enough, I don't want it with a flawless finish. I /want/ to see some play wear on it. I don't really care if theres a case to it or not but a case would be nice. Amp wise, don't matter to me as long as it works :p

That sound familiar. Didn't he have a real deep voice? Thats all that come to mind when I hear his name is that he had a real deep voice?

And I have to apologize for all the typos in my last post (I edited it)... I got called away by someone at the door while I was typing it out and my kitten decided to lounge on the keyboard while I was away. I /thought/ I corrected the kitty embellishment on what I had typed out and then saw where I didnt. LOL

Hehe I keep putting off taking fresh pics of my Foundation5 and revamping its 'for sale' thread downstairs. I don't think I should wait any longer (on it or the other ones I need to part with for that matter)...sheesh...not one but 2 Fenders to pay for...Unless its something totally not what was described to be or its been major modded its a pretty safe bet to say Im getting it. :p But the other Fender comes first as I committed to it FIRST. And THAT one is a major find as well IMO.../another/ Cowpoke with HSC :bassist: That is one Fender that IMO is so awesome a backup is a must :cool::D

You know, for $550 it doesn't matter if it was refinished or pickup swapped....it's still worth more than what he wants.

Time to look at several websites and get edjucated on what old Fenders look like.
I hope this really turns out for you. That would be cool!

I suppose you are right. And if by some chance it has had a pup change or something I would like to think I could track down proper replacements for it? I kind of dont have any use for the amp so if this Fender (assuming it is truly a vintage Fender) isn't all original, the amp might be able to fund getting it back the way it was. The only thing that will give me second thoughts is if its been refinished. I really can't afford this deal but I will make a way to get it. Its a once in a lifetime chance for me and I won't let it pass by. But if its been refinished I won't hang onto it long LOL Gee I wonder where Id sell/trade it? LOL But thats ONLY if its been refinished.

And the crazy thing is me and this guy live so close to each other I will lay money he heard me practicing yesterday out in my carport (and he probably wasn't impressed :p I was practicing 'shredding' and had it going on there for a bit but was also trying to do some stuff a bit above my present skill with it...oopsie LOL ...and ok. some consider that 'wanking' on a bass...so what :p..it has its place I feel). I know I'd hear him if he fired up this Pbass and rig too. Gah!! so close and yet I can't look at it till next week......

Come on, the sparkle finish would be awesome (if it's the pictured bass)!

But when it comes down to it, who cares if it's a refin if it's a great instrument? I played a refinished broadcaster a few months ago and the fact that it had been refinished was the last thing on my mind...man oh man, what a guitar...

Yea you bring up a good point too. Guess I'm being picky where I shouldn't be and Im also not awake yet...went to bed way too late and got up way too early. All so I can finish my masterpiece Halloween decoration out in my front yard. Yea I know today is Halloween and its just now getting done but Halloween decorations are at their best when they are put up just before the holiday :p

+1 on playability and tone!!! Im so hoping its got one of the thinner necks from the 70s and (I hope I got this right, Im doing some reading up on Fenders here) the A width? (1.5 at the nut). Something thin(er) front to back and 1.5 is my preferred choice. ^_^

And yes playability and tone is all that matter BUT color unfortunately does play a role (though for this one its an exception for sure!!). I found that out the months I tried to learn to love my red Peavey Foundations. In the end the color and that 90s headstock design was just too much for me to try and overlook. BUT I got the Foundation I wanted in color/headstock design first before I committed to letting go of the red ones. It was their playability and tone that kept me hanging onto them and why I couldn't mark them for selling till I got another one.

LOL I know I tried to play it cool when I finally figured out what my neighbor was saying. As I told a friend in PM; he just walked up to me and was out of the blue with; 'Its a Fender, old...70s with an amp [as old] that 'will break windows'.' and I was like :eyebrow: "Dude, what are you talking about?" Then it dawned on me and I was like holy @#$@#$ but on the outside I was like 'oh really? mmm yea ok..well Im picking up another Fender in a couple of weeks but yea, I'll look at that one too..." ( :hyper: )
